Lendaddy's explanation of the "Choking Ghost".

While sleeping your breathing can actually become so shallow that you go without air for some time. Your mind tries to come up with rationalizations for this sensation. Someone "on top of you" is a logical explanation for the mind, hence it is commonly reported. I remember that I had these satin sheets years ago and I would have these horrible nighmares that I was peeling my face off like a scab (neat I know) anyway, this went on for some time and it really bugged me. Then one night I woke up and found that my head had slipped off the pillow and my stubble was caught in the satin sheets and pulling away was a painfull sensation (similar to removing a scab) anyway I got rid of those and the dreams left. Keep in mind these dreams were very real to me, no doubt due to the actual physical stimulation that caused my mind to come up with a logical scenerio. The mind is a powerful thing.

Now that I think about it, when I was in college I'd would hang around campus during the summer, take a couple of classes, drink everyday, and work for a contracter I knew.

Anyway, he and I were working one morning and noticed a terrible smell from the next apartment. I joked and said it smelled like death. Well it was, the long time tenant had died. He was that quintessential old man that lived in a college apartment complex and would always ***** about noise and such.

The weirdest thing happened when we opened the door, I swear it felt like an electric wind rushed out of the place.

I didn't say anything bout that "wind" until a couple weeks later.

We had gutted the place, new dry wall, yadda yadda, and the property owner was checking the place out, said "I hope it's not haunted!" My boss and I looked at eachother and said the same thing "No way, he got the hell outta here as soon as we opened the door."

Weird.

You can rationilize your "choking ghost" experience anyway you want, but my experience had nothing to do with your explanation. I won't go into details, but I know from the experience that when a person is truly terrified, no sound comes out when you scream.

hey, I'm not saying anything other than there are possible/probable explanations for much of this stuff. Your experiences are nothing I can attest to. But for whatit's worth, when someone has no air in their lungs you can't hear them scream either

my wife is from south america (guyana - you know jim jones and the poisened cool aid) and her culture is very superstitious. i never get tired of her stories and beliefs about ghosts.

Here's another one for ya.

My aunt's house is most definitely haunted; nobody in my family even questions it anymore. You can go over there nearly every day, and weird stuff will happen. The remote for the one television that they have will end up in the garage somehow, locked doors will be found open after leaving the room and coming back after a few minutes, etc. Anyhow, there are two concrete events that really stand out:

In my aunt's house, there is a darkroom in the basement. My aunt and my great-uncle have always developed their own photos. Well, one day about 10 years ago, my great uncle was down in the basement developing a roll of film, and suddenly came running up the stairs - white as a ghost, pardon the expression. He had to lay down and was spooked for a good two hours. Well, he never told anyone what he saw down there, but he never set foot in that basement again. He died about 4 years ago, never telling anyone what he saw.

My aunt collects music boxes.She has them all on display in a small room near the back of the house. One night, at about 3 in the morning, my aunt and uncle were both awakened.... all the music boxes had started playing at once.

Happened to my older Sister. She was preparing herself for the morning in front of the bathroom mirror. She says she was putting on makeup when she saw what she thought was her husband watching from the bathroom doorway. Then she realized that 1) the person she saw was in his 60s (her husband was in his 30s and 2) her husband was in their bedroom getting dressed. When she turned to see who it was, it took off down the hallway and dissappeared. *freaky*

But, the weird part was, a few years later when they went to sell the house, a title search was done. Wouldn't you know it, there was a older couple who bought the house previously, but only the wife's name was listed as a seller. Her husband had passed away during the ownership of the house!

I used to do a lot of Civil War reenacting, camping on the battlefields can lead to some strange experiences for some folks. I've never seen anything but know people who say they have. Two notable places- Bushong ice house on New Market Battlefield, New Market VA. and Gettysburg.

The ice house one was the really scary story, as related by a friend of mine and has been corroborated by others. Jack was on a cannon crew who were going as authentic as possible, ie, without tents and any other modern stuff. There was a thumpin good storm that night and he sought shelter in the ice house. When entering, he noticed a boy in an odd uniform sitting in the far corner, Jack even spoke to the kid. The boy didn't say anything, but just looked at him. Jack walked over to the door to let some coffee out, turned back and the boy was gone. There is only one way in and out of the ice house, the door. Jack swears he saw a ghost that night and you can't drag him into the ice house, we tried and about got our collective butts kicked. Anyway, one of the cadets from VMI that fought in the original battle was mortally wounded and made his way to the ice house where he bled to death. I've spoken with several people who say they've seen the ghost. I haven't but it makes for a great story.

Now for Gettysburg, there are whole books on hauntings there. I know several folks who have had odd experiences there.

From an objective POV, if ghosts are real and act like the psychics say, the staging of a mock battle on the very ground where they died is a surefire way to stir something up. I just know that there are bunches of stories going around that aren't published and the live persons involved weren't engaged in alcoholic knee walking at the time, but were so affected they got that way shortly after the experience.

from what i've heard, Gettysburg has one of the highest concentrations of ghost sitings in the world. People are awakened at night by confederate armies apparently marching through their bedrooms...

this really strange guy lives in one our apts. one day he told my mother that sometimes he hears weird noises and a sort of green smoke fills the room. He then asked her if anyone had died in the apt. she never told him that a few years prior to him renting the place, a man that had lived there for years had shot himself thru the heart and died in that bedroom. I found the guy 3 days after his suicide. I guess the dead guy is still hanging around.

I love good ghost stories and films so I'm not sure if I want to be rational and find logical explanations or just enjoy your tales.

I don't know if this qualifies as a "ghost" story or not, but here goes:

My fiance and I started doing my Family Tree (yes, it branches!) a few years ago. We were stumped past my Great Grandfather. We knew his Father and Mother were buried in a cemetery near the one where my G-Grandfather was buried according to family legend, but there were no records of the deaths, or the burials. The caretaker of the cemetery flat told us that he had been the caretaker for 40 years, and he replaced his father in that job, and they weren't buried there.

One day were at the grave of my Great Grandfather, and my fiance started talking to his headstone. If you have done genealogy, you know how frustrating a dead end can be. She told him that she was glad that he was laughing at us from heaven, and he was one hell of a practical joker, and that the joke had gone on too long. She wanted to know where his parents were buried! She was getting Pissed!

We then drove to the other cemetery, and just parked the car and walked around. I was drawn to an old section of the cemetery with no markers. This area is about an acre. While I was walking in that area, something made me stop dead in my tracks. I can't explain it, but it was just a "gut" feeling. I started probing around with my knife, and found My Great-Great -Grandfather's headstone buried about a foot beneath the soil. He was buried in 1879. I immediately walked what would have been 2 rows east, and two graves north, and did the same thing with my knife, and found my Great-Great-Grandmother's stone buried in the same way. She was buried in 1874. None of us living had ever seen the stones before, and one distant cousin was pushing 100 years old at that time.

We went back to the other cemetery, and my fiance thanked my Great Grandfather for his help. The following monday we went back to the courthouse to look for my Great-Great-Grandfather's death certificate again. When the clerk took the book from the shelf with the dates we had given her, His death certificate fell out of the book, onto the floor! She hadn't even opened the book.

We had walked that cemetery at least 50 times before, and had looked at the book of death records at least 10 times.

I'm glad I had that kind of experience, instead of the ones you guys are telling!

Another story for you. And it was very fuggin scarry at the time.

When I was about 18 I lived accross the road from a young chick called Robyn O'Brien, and we used to flirt a bit. One day she asked if I would like to come around to her sisters place to help baby sit the two young kids.

Well, after a (very) short while Robyn and I were fooling about on the couch and an internal door slammed REALLY hard. The sort of hard that you would have to put real muscle into, to slam, due to air resistance. So we very quickly put our clothes back on expecting to find a very pissed off sister standing by the back door, but there was no one there. We were a little freaked out by this so locked all the doors and windows, and LOL, got back to where we were. WHAM, another slam. I got to the door in what seemed like .5 of a second and there was no one there. And the odd thing about it was the kids in bed a very short distance away and still sleeping. Being about 18 I was keen to get back to where we were, and the door did this stunt again another once or twice.

I was just about to get a leg over virginal Robyn when the roll down blind, right next to us, shot up. That was it for me, I was outa here. I said to Robyn to grab the kids and we would go back to my place until the sister got home but she didn't want to take the kids away (the kids were still sleeping - odd). I know I don't sound like much of a hero, but I was off. When I got home my phone was ringing and it was Robyn, and we talked until her sister got home. In the hour until the sis' got home the door slammed about once every 5 or 10 minutes.

Robyn and I didn't speak for about the next 15 years...
