I'm a 911 guy, but I'm getting a Boxer

Dog that is.
Working with the Greater Ohio Boxer Rescue and should be meeting tomorrow. Looks like I'll be getting a 2 year old female with a great disposition. Anyone have one, and any words of advise?

John

We got our current Dane from the local Great Dane Rescue organization. I'd encourage you to give her some space and let her get acquainted to your house and you on her own terms. She will be confused and probably a bit frightened at first. Much depends on her background; if she was abused by a prior owner for example. Good luck!

Boxers are the best - great dispositions and very intelligent. They need exercise to be happy, room to run around.

We got a 2nd boxer (a solid black one) from a rescue to keep out brindle female company. It actually worked out pretty well since our female is totally dominant and this poor male dog had been abused and was rather submissive. Eventually we found another good home for him as when our son was born 2 dogs was just too much given our living conditions/circumstances.

I think boxers are a great breed...although they are spring loaded for life. Our female is now 8 years old and still crazy...she just sleeps more. I would tend to avoid having two females in the household...I think male/female and male/male should be fine.

We've got a decent sized yard which already has an invisible fence installed. We're hopeful we can train her easily for the new accomodations.
The dog is a 2 year old female who was turned in to the pound because the owners were moving and couldn't handle her. She's been with a foster parent for three weeks and is doing very well. The foster mom says she is a terriffic dog and that the only difficult item is she won't go when on a leash. She must have had a fenced yard with her first owners. Other then that she says we'll love her at first sight. My almost 7 year old can't wait. I'll post a picture once she's home.

Thanks.
Hard to believe her owners took her and a male to the pound and dumped them. Apparently they couldn't handle the responsibility anymore. They were both rescued by the Greater Ohio Boxer Rescue. The male was placed a few weeks later, but the female was pregnant so they held her. She had 5 pups and just weaned them a few weeks ago. She was in foster care for 2 1/2 months and now she's got a permanent home.

Boxer's are great--here's my Daisy. I'd like to get another this summer. And they do shed--just shorter hairs.

Boxers are awesome dogs. My family has had them for about 18 years. Fantastic with kids but remember when young they can get over excited easily.
I am sure you will have many years of fun with your new boxer.
I want to get another one myself but I am a nomad having trouble living more then 5 years in the one country. I had to leave my last dog behind in Indonesia and I still miss him (so does my daughter).

I wonder if anyone has called their Boxer, "Boxster"?

We have two neighbors, both with multiple dogs, both irresponsible, leaving them out in all kinds of weather and all night, barking and whining to get in. We have called the Police when one, A Ridgeback, jumped the fence when no one was at home and was intimidating the kids in the neighborhood.

Although an animal lover, and former dog/cat owner, I wonder at the sanity and maturity of many folks who get a pet and then ignore it and do not train it to be a "good neighbor". I am beginning to think there are too many dogs and not enough owners with common sense.

Please excuse the rant..very little sleep last night and I bet you can figure why.....

Bob,
You don't have to think very hard to realize there are way too many dogs and not enough responsible owners. I guess every little bit of help is a step in the right direction.

As to too many dogs. Maybe. The real problem is that there are too many bad owners. Maybe we should put some of them to sleep.

And too many bad parents. I wonder if these happen to be the same people?

well, the good owners usually treat their animals like kids, and the bad parents treat their kids like animals.
