It's been a love afair with Porsche's ever since

When I was five I used to ride in the back of a VW bug - on the package shelf over the motor (yes, unsafe but fun). I like where I sit in the 911 better, but it smells the same!

EDIT: Weird I was actually posting while this was move OT...weird!

I'm 29. The SC is 26, the CAB is 18. I wanted a 911 since I was 6 or 7. Bought my first, the SC when I was 25.

Define vintage? I'm 33, have a '65 356 C coupe (Dad bought new, I inherited it) and my Mom and I share a '84 911 coupe wiht the turbo look (M491) option... although it is sorta for sale. I'll never sell the 356 though...

bbq_duck 06-18-2004 07:55 AM

The younger guys I talk to all rave about HP & jap cars: rightly so if HP is what it takes and where it's at....and I do envy the newness and not having to think about costly repairs or paint etc...but what they said to me (surprisingly) is that they could easily see the attraction in an old 911. Kind of like paying their dues? lol.

I think if you like cars then ultimately age is no barrier whatsoever.

The difference between a "sports car" and a "sporty car" is intent. For the most part, these imports are commuter cars that are doing double duty as drag racers. With a few notable exceptions (3000GT, Supra, RX-7 turbo). The Porsche is a the closest thing to the myth I've ever seen (a race car for the street).

I was talking to some kid in the Wendy's parking lot the other day and he was asking about top speed, etc. I told him the top speed was pretty modest and I hadn't actually taken the car up that fast. His car, he said with some pride, will do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds and will run the quarter mile in about 13. I told him he'd beat me off the line but all he'd see was my fat Porsche rear end after the first turn. I told him my modest 180 hp would take many cars with double that power to the cleaners on a real race track and he just stared at me like I was stupid.

Anyway, I guess there are some who just don't understand. But for the most part younger guys really like the car but it is a complete mystery to them. Then there is the occasional guy who is really into european cars, which is great to find.

Mike

I conside my 911 to be an "athelete's car" more than an (intramural) "sports car". :p After a good drive in it, I'm tired. Feel free to tell that to guys in the Wendy's parking lot. ;)

To add to that, I don't think that "overweight" 3000GT and Supra should even be considered as sports cars, let alone have a label of "notable exception." Sure, you put enough tire on them and they will stick well in corners. Can they go fast? W/ a big turbo(s) they definitely can. Then again, I've also seen snowmobiles run the 1/4 in 10 sec. Does that make them sports cars too?

36years old the cars 34 1970 911t and looks better than me for its age. Though we are both a little rusty.

JLS - 911E 06-18-2004 08:00 PM

I'm 4 years older than my '70 911E, with 4 kids. I love it when my 2 year old says "Daddy's Porsche", & points to my car.

Did I mention I also have a minivan. :(

I'm 35, but was 28 when I got my '79sc.

mikes72t 06-19-2004 04:25 AM

I am only two years older than my 72 911.

At the PCA event last week, we were the youngest people there with the oldest ( and slowest) car.

Both cars are just flat out fast and can be made to handle really well with a few suspension mods. It's not the same class as a Porsche maybe, but they are some of the more interesting Japanese cars out there. I would at the Skyline to the list as well.

I was born in 1987 (most of you guys have cars that old) and the car is 15 years older than I am ('72S sunroof). Believe it!
