Our new VP?

Born in South Carolina, John Edwards grew up in Robbins, North Carolina and likes to claim himself as a native North Carolinian. He graduated from North Carolina State with a BS in textiles before earning a law degree from the University of North Carolina.

Before being elected to the Senate he was a practicing personal-injury attorney for 20 years, achieving status as on the top ambulance-chasers in the state’s history. Edwards won verdicts totaling $152 million, including one for $25 million, the largest personal-injury verdict ever in North Carolina. With 30% or more going to him as the lawyer for every victory, he amassed a fortune estimated between $20 and $50 million.

The bulk of Mr. Edwards work was in medical malpractice. He vigorously opposes all tort reform.

Mark Wilson 07-06-2004 09:26 AM

Maybe he can sue Haliburton holding them liable for the Iraq war.

Superman 07-06-2004 09:30 AM

Interesting bio. I guess if he were republican then he'd be regarded as a shrewd and talented professional that knows what a business opportunity looks like. Savvy.

But he's a democrat, so that means he's an ambulance chaser.

So........we've got Big Oil and Haliburton in the White House right now, while a man who has fought for and achieved justice for victims of medical malpractice is somehow too sleazy for that job.

BlueSkyJaunte 07-06-2004 09:31 AM

Sounds like a real "man of the people", just like his boss. And his boss's boss...er, I mean, "wife".

osidak 07-06-2004 09:39 AM

Super I am sorry as a North Carolinian I get a little perturbed when the man spends almost half of his one and only term campaigning for another job. Those personal injury lawsuits have driven the cost of health care through the roof. I know doctors that are paying $200K a year for malpractice insurance and have never had a claim against them.

While I would be very upset if anyone harmed a loved one of mine wither intentional, gross negligence, or just pure stupidity I really don't see how $25,000,000 is going to make things all better.

So yes I think Edwards is scum and an ambulance chaser.

osidak 07-06-2004 10:03 AM

Read my above statement. I work in IT and I live in NC

osidak 07-06-2004 10:14 AM

The Dr = SCWDP

The whining about what doctors pay for insurace comes from the high cost of health care and what people like Edwards do to drive that.

araine901 07-06-2004 10:34 AM

I thought only republicans were capitolist bastards. You mean the dems have some too? And they make you pay to see thier advertising(F-911)? I think we repubs have been mis labled.

Moses 07-06-2004 10:51 AM

Ambulance chasers, skirt chasers, WMD chasers. They're all chasing something. Generally it involves my wallet.

Sounds like the flip flop king, John Kerry got a flip flop Veep.

Funny thing is, these two were so adversarial during the primaries, I didn't think Edwards would 'settle'.

Kerry's two previous candidates of rumor (McCain and Dean) are both now campaigning for Bush.

Nader sounds saner every day.

This election is going to be fun.

Moneyguy1 07-06-2004 12:17 PM

I dunno.....

My initial thought is, if something untoward happened to the President, I would rather see President Edwards than President Cheney. That prospect absolutely scares me.

widebody911 07-06-2004 12:38 PM

That's not what I saw:

Look at the second definition down on this page. This is fortuitous.

}{arlequin 07-06-2004 12:55 PM

LOL... CNN has a LIVE feed aimed at Edwards' front entrance in Georgetown LOL

BlueSkyJaunte 07-06-2004 01:46 PM

Hillary Clinton was born where, grew up and went to school where, and is now senator of which state?

turbo6bar 07-06-2004 02:28 PM

John Edwards is proof there is little separation betweens Democrats and Republicans.

techweenie 07-06-2004 02:48 PM

SoulMan59:

You're new around here. You'll soon see that 'our conservatives' are allergic to facts. But they're very emotional and able to repeat almost anything said to them.

So GWB's string of business failures and unremarkable governorship = excellent qualifications to be President.

A record of failures on the economy, international diplomacy, the "war on terra" and a blind eye to sleaze = really good reasons for re-election.

Looks like the true party of "getting rich on the backs of the poor" appears to be the Democrat party...Yep, raping the poor and driving up medical care costs.

Yankee911 07-06-2004 05:06 PM

Hey Mull, you witless wonder---

If you watch the news tonight you would learn that Edwards parents were mill workers and he was 1st in his family to go to college. He defended the little people who were hurt by the big guys. He left his lucrative law practice to be a Senator. Damn--sounds like the American Dream to me.

Of course, you guys would rather have a son of privlege who failed at business and a crook as VP who made a success at stealing. I can see how your guys are better than Edwards--on the crook scale, that is.

Oh ****, I left out how Bush/Cheney raped everybody and will have to raise taxes to pay for their witless war in IRAQ.

Moses 07-06-2004 05:25 PM

Political disclaimer; I am not a republican.

Edwards made his fortune with medical malpractice cases. Specifically, judgements against obstetricians for cerebral palsy cases.

Many decades ago it was commonly assumed that neonatal brain damage that resulted in cerebral palsy was related to the delivery process and MDs were thought responsible and paid heavily. More than thirty years ago, researchers discovered that newborns delivered by routine scheduled Cesarean had the same rate of cerebral palsy as the general population.

The legal community largely abandoned neonatal cerebral palsy as an actionable offense. Except John Edwards. He made it a career. Other attorneys have said that Edwards was just so damn charming in the courtroom that he would routinely convince the jury to disregard current medical standards and reward his clients (and himself) generously.

The man made himself rich by destroying careers and bankrupting physicians who had done nothing wrong. He is an amoral, malevolent opportunist. In other words, a perfect politician.

Yankee911 07-06-2004 06:25 PM

So the little girl caught in the swimming pool drain was a made up case?

It would be nice to hear the unvarnished truth just once around here. Not just more re-hashed Limbaugh crap. You are telling me that all Edward's cases were cerebal palsy cases?? I find that hard to believe. Of course, he had to spew to a jury to get them to destroy the poor mean doctors.

When your Porsche mechanic ****s up your engine rebuild and it blows up within the warranty period---he gets to build it again on his dime.

When the roofing contractor hires drunks to roof your house and it leaks--he gets to honor his warranty.

When a doctor, god-like that he is, ****s up and cripples someone for life, the evil attorney who gets a judgement from a jury to pay for care for the rest of the child's life is an evil Nazi. I'm not buying that ****.

Halm 07-06-2004 06:38 PM

A few years ago when Edwards was campaigning for the Senate, our son was a student at NC State. Keep in mind that at that time my son was totally into women and beer (well, maybe 4 years later he still is!). . . And totally apolitical. In any case, he came home for some reason and mentioned that he had gone to hear JE give a speech. When it was over, he said he felt a need top run to his apartment and shower the slim was so thick!!! FWIW.

araine901 07-06-2004 06:40 PM

I dont think Cheney made his millions making health care cost more.

For Wanker911:

Did 'Junk Science' Make John Edwards Rich?
By Marc Morano
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer
January 20, 2004

(CNSNews.com) - The superstar trial lawyer accomplishments of John Edwards, which allowed this former millworker to amass a personal fortune, finance his successful U.S. Senate run in 1998 and catapult himself into the 2004 race for president, may have been partially built on "junk science," according to legal and medical experts who spoke with CNSNews.com .

Edwards, who with a late surge finished second in Monday's Iowa Caucuses, continues to cite one of his most lucrative legal victories as an example of how he would stand up for "the little guy" if elected president.

Edwards became one of America's wealthiest trial lawyers by winning record jury verdicts and settlements in cases alleging that the botched treatment of women in labor and their deliveries caused infants to develop cerebral palsy, a brain disorder that causes motor function impairment and lifelong disability.

Although he was involved in other types of personal injury litigation, Edwards specialized in infant cerebral palsy and brain damage cases during his early days as a trial lawyer and with the Raleigh, N.C., firm of Edwards & Kirby.

Edwards has repeatedly told campaign audiences that he fought on behalf of the common man against the large insurance companies. But a political critic with extensive knowledge of Edwards' legal career in North Carolina told CNSNews.com a different story

"Edwards always helped the little guy as long as he got a million dollars out of it," said the source, who did not want to be identified.

The cause of cerebral palsy has been debated since the 19th century. Some medical studies dating back to at least the 1980s asserted that doctors could do very little to cause cerebral palsy during the birthing process. Two new studies in 2003 further undermined the scientific premise of the high profile court cases that helped Edwards become a multi-millionaire and finance his own successful campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Here's more BF-

You think human reproduction comes with a warranty?
So every time you slip one past the goalie and she gets pregnant, you get a healthy child unless someone screws up? Sorry, but that isn't how it works.

The point is that Edwards knew that medical care rarely causes cerebral palsy, but misled the jury for his own benefit.

Your son is a good judge of charachter. http://slate.msn.com/id/2086953/

Edwards could make a dung beetle queasy.

speeder 07-06-2004 07:56 PM

Moses, Let me guess; you have no problems w/ Cheney as a world leader, right? That's what I thought, just checking.

Go back to work now.

Mark Wilson 07-06-2004 08:06 PM

No one except the reactionary left think Dick Cheney has done anything wrong. It's all just drummed up noise from the DNC. Too bad some seemingly intelligent people have bought into it.

osidak 07-06-2004 08:08 PM

Who the hell cares about Cheney. At the moment we are talking about Edwards.

No one for a second believes Cheney will run for president (assuming Bush wins this time out) So the only leaves one other option for him to become president. Are you far lefties planning something

:0

cegerer 07-06-2004 08:33 PM

Can somebody give Edwards a call and tell him to 'edit' the derogatory Kerry comments on his website ...... :D

Right from your posted link . . .

Quote:

Mr. Edwards handled all sorts of cases. He litigated contract and insurance disputes. He sued the American National Red Cross three times, claiming that the AIDS virus was transmitted through tainted blood products, and obtained a confidential settlement in each case. He defended a Wilmington, N.C., newspaper owned by The New York Times Company in a libel suit.
Having a daughter that suffered severe oxygen deprivation during a failed vaginal delivery I am a bit sensitive to cases where doctors drag their feet on performing a c-section.

Due to my wifes small hip size and the size of my daughters head the obstratician knew before my daughter was born it was likely to be a no go but decided give vaginal birth anyway.

When I asked why we could not opt for the c-section right off the bat he told me point blank that he would have a hard time with the HMO that we were with if we did not give natural child birth a try first.

Lets just say I was a bit livid while my daughter spent a week in the ICU while I was being told that she might have suffered permanant brain damage from the time she spent stuck half way down my wifes birth canal.

Palsy debate or not, more power to lawyers who go after doctors who make these kinds of ****ed up decisions for the sake of the bean counters. I know first hand how these situations go and I am not going to let some industry sponsored 'studies' try to dismiss the common sense about what happens when children are deprived of oxygen during the birth process. Even the article admits that around 10% of CP cases are from oxygen deprovation so who is to say that the cases edwards argued were not legitimate?

I find it a bit ironic that Moses is jumping on edwards back just weeks after posting that the quality of medical care would go down if doctors were protected from malpractice suits.

The fact that edwards has done a variety of suits but the focus is being placed on a certain type of disputed case he has won big awards on speaks volumes that the right wing spin machine is going to be getting as much mileage as it can get from this issue.

You are no Republican...You are exactly what I implied with my first post to you...a LIAR who suffers from head-in-the-ass-syndrome.

I am still waiting for that ass kicking Spank...No, not ass-pounding (you being a Democrat from Mass and all), so if that is what you are looking forward to you will be unpleasantly surprised when you wake up.

350HP930 07-06-2004 10:51 PM

Well mull, you should be ashamed that its hard to differentiate between your style of posting and that of a teenage bull****ter.

Bleyseng 07-06-2004 10:55 PM

I am all for malpractice suits as it does hold doctors feet to the flames.
The $25million suit was for a little girl for had her guts sucked out by a defective swimming pool drain. The 25 million award was to pay for the costs of her care for the rest of her life as she had no intestines.
I have a friend who kid was brain damaged by a idiot doctor at birth. He and his wife sued and got money to cover their invalid son's care for the rest of his life. He requires 24hr care! How much does that cost for say....60 yrs?

I do like Edwards and think it was a great effin choice for VP!
