anyone know of a good early mustang bbs?

I'm seriously looking at getting myself a 65-66 fastback and was now looking for my Pelican "replacement" (if there is such a thing) I've always wanted one (just like my 911) and want to get one before they get to be too much $$$

The early year groups on corral.net aren't too bad. I have yet to find a BBS as responsive and diverse at this one though.

Ask me anything you want to know ... I've had mine for 13 years ... resto-mod'd it myself

I don't have a running 911 so I can't compare - yet. My Porsche project is pure race car so it won't be much of a comparison either. I'm thinking about getting into a 964 sometime next year.

The early Mustangs cruise very nice no matter how you have them set up (stock, GT, more towards race stiff). Lots of aftermarket stuff out there to make them handle very nice too. Lots of brake options, lots of driveline choices. I have a 289-4V mated to a modern T5 5-speed (was a 4-spd car) and a 3:50 Detroit Locker 9" rear ... always can use more power. I run something just a bit stiffer than a Shelby-type suspension setup - poly bushings, 620# front springs, 4.5 rear leafs, 1" front and 3/4" rear sways and 15x7 Torque Thrust Ds. A nice combo for the street and open track events.

The pure stocks are nice, but I prefer a resto-mod. If you're looking for authenticity, watch your codes (lots of 6-cyl and 289-2V conversions to 4V or HiPo) and color combos. Just depends on what you want ... something finished, a driver, or a project.

Plan on a southern/west coast road trip to find a rust-free car. Almost all Mustang floors and doors rust - can't be helped. Some good repairs and some bad. I found mine in North Carolina - was tired but solid so I did a full resto-mod - correct color/engine combo with perf updates underneath.

Again any questions you may have, just ask. In addition to restoring mine on my own, I worked at a Mustang restoration shop for awhile so I know my way around '65-73s.

Thanks...right now I'm looking at a very nice restored numbers matching 65 fastback, Raven Black with Red interior...has two small rust spots on lower door area (one each side) about quarter size that I'd have fixed...engine is 289/271 hp...he's asking $16k for it...I've seen them higher...

problem is I'd have to part ways with the 911SC...

Not a bad price, but I'd knock some off for the body repair you know is coming.

Check and double-check the floors. Also check the cowl (crawl in and look under the dash at the extreme right/left) - you should see no holes or a cowl repair kit (plastic collars that get glued in to cover 95% of the rust holes). Look over the seals and top of the fuel tank (the trunk floor)too. Find out how long ago it was restored and what was involved.

Tough choice between the Mustang or the SC. The Mustangs are appreciating that's for sure ... not sure about the SC - check into it before you decide. IMO I'm sure the Porsche is a better car overall as long as it solid/sorted out - Mustangs are dirt simple and they were cranking them out at 1000/day in '65-66 so the quality will never be the same.
