ebay etiquette.

So...I sold a set of spacers on ebay recently.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7908693455&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESO%3AIT

The auction ended nearly three weeks ago and I still don't have payment. I got a response from the fella last week stating he had a relative who had died. At the time I was ready to start the non-pay bidder process. With that contact I have given him until today (almost a week) and I still have no payment, so...I'm considering my last effort to make good with him. My email reads the following;

Still, I haven't received anything from you.

If payment is not in my mailbox when I get home tomoorow (The three week mark) then I will start the non-pay bidder process (to get my ebay fees returned).

I understand that this has not been the best time for you but the amount of effort required to put a check in the mail is minimal ( I went through the same thing myself earlier this year).

Please return this email and include the date that you mailed the payment (if it has been mailed). If it hasn't been mailed yet then this process is complete and I will move on with the non-pay bidder process and offer the item to the next highest bidder.

Please let me know as soon as possible.

End of note;

So, is that too harsh? Frankley I have gone through this, I had an auction that won the day we left for Springfield, IL for 10 days to take care of my Wife's Father's remains the day after he died. I emailed the guy the situation and told him not to send the item to me until I had returned but that I would mail him payment as soon as I had a total. We were grieving but still able to write and mail a check.

Maybe I'm just a harda$$.

Thoughts?

You are WAAAAY off base.

You gave this guy plenty of rope.

Do the non bidder process if no check tomorrow.

Being off base here is because you feel the slightest bit bad. Sorry, after being ripped off many times by non paying 'customers' on eBay, I hold the line.

Sing is right on this -- as usual.

The non-paying bidder process is a notice from eBay, and he will still have plenty of time to lose more relatives before getting an official 'ding.'

I sent him note stating that I was offering the item to the next highest bidder.

He responded quicker than ever and called me a jerk. And that I hadn't sent him the payment info quickly enough (Same day isn't whick enough?) which accounted for the first week.

Thanks fellas.

My otherwise spotless ebay record I'm sure is tarnished now. In fairness to his loss I don't plan on leaving negative feedback unless he dings me.

More people seem to die right after a relative makes an e-bay purchase. Thats why I won't let any of my relatives buy from there.

it's what we used to call a 'Mexican standoff' but now, it's just another dramatic 'Tarentino signature moment.' Hold back your feedback and he won't give you a negative in fear of getting one himself.

Mike,

I would have given him a week, two tops. You're right on the money (pun not intended) that it takes little effort to send a cheque (I'm Canadian, everything is spelled differently up here).

If he gives you grief, not only should you write him up as a non-paying bidder, you should give him a mark against his score. I don't remember if that's one and the same; I haven't sold anything on EBay in years (I have two points out of two sales )

Anyway, don't let him get the better of you. You have given him more than he deserves. EBay is for doing business, not for making friends.

You should write him up anyway, perfect record be damned.

If he did this to you, what's to stop him from doing it again? I think you'd owe it to the next schmoe who has to deal with this twit in a transaction. MHO

3 weeks? I would not have waited this long. You are too patient.

The threat of leaving negative feedback because you "dared" to leave him same is a common tactic. If you have a good feedback record, don't worry about it. Let ebay and others know he is not one to trust. Whenever I see negative feedback, I look at the complainers feedback record to get a sense if they conduct their transactions fairly. Have you seen his feedback record?

At this point (given his response), I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of receiving the goods. Sell the item to the next highest bidder or relist it, post feedback for him, then move on. Life is too short to worry about the cretins who think they're the center of the universe.

You can (and others can) read descriptions of negative feedbacks and the circumstances around them; in a lot of cases, it's obvious who's at fault. In many others, when you take the 10 seconds to look, you can see that there are in fact two sides to the story and draw your own conclusions. I wouldn't fret it if you're afraid of this bozo "negative"-ing your rating. If I had one on mine, people that just "dumb everything down" to a "oh look, he's got one negative feedback out of 100+ positive, can't do a transaction with HIM" aren't the types of people I'd probably prefer to deal with anyway.

I've bought from people with one or more negatives, no problem. Ever.
