Within then last couple of weeks there have been sightings all over. At the same time these were taken our nieghbor a 1/2 mile away had three in his yard. Not sure if it was the famed three bear. But, to answer your question pretty wierd to see them, rare occurance for sure.

don't worry. he's in New Hampshire

rcm: wonder what's encouraging them to tread so close to humans. I suppose it could be anything from a change in their habitat to plain coincidence. does the local wildlife department have any theories?

Black and brown bears are pussies.

Whistle at them and they run like hell.

Grizzles... uh oh.

BS! Black & Brown bears need to learn to fear man before they are puddy cats...Close to either, I'd want to be packing more than a whistle. But then, maybe the bears in L.A. are different than those in the upper South Santiam canyon of Oregon...

Lol...LA bears...

My experience with bears has been in Yosemite (4 days out in the middle of no-where near Hetch Hetchy Resevoir) and in Oregon (too drunk too remember where).

Experience in Yosemite:
4 days out on an 8 backpacking trip, my friend is cooking his dinner for lunch, we were starving. Me and my two other buddies were on the other side of this creek, trying to catch fish. Long story short, this black bear smelt my buddies grub and cruised into our camp. We had to chase him away three times before he wouldn't come back. Literally, all you need is a whistle and to jump up and down. I doubt he saw many people, we saw two people during that whole trip, and that was on the first day.

Oregon was the same thing, except that bear never came back after the first visit....40 drunk frat guys with too much to drink...I still have no idea what that bear was thinking.

I worked at REI for a couple summers in NorCal, that's where I learned about the whistle trick. Some pack pistols, I say that's just extra weight on your back, I pack a mariners whistle.

Unless I'm in AK, then I'm sporting a 30/30 locked and loaded, aim for the heart, grizzle's skull is thick.

EDIT: HIJACK!!

Some of my Alaska fishing partners. (No zoom)

Why do we go there? To steal their food!

For those interested; 15 pound Silver Salmon on a 6-weight fly rod. About 30 fish/day each. Kamishak river, Alaska.

Think I'm gonna have to agree with Philip here. RCM's pics remind me of a time when I lived in Lake Tahoe. One day I walked out onto my back deck and wasn't really paying attention to my surroundings. I didn't even notice (at first) the black bear that had wandered right up to the railing.

Well, long story short, when I did notice him, he was no more than 10 feet away, and fortunately, on the other side of the railing. Without even thinking about it, I yelled at it (hopefully I didn't sound like my little sister! ) Anyway, the noise startled him and caused him to run away.

(Hehehe, I say "run" away, but I assure you, he left at his own pace!)

I believe he was going after my garbage cans. Fortunately I beat him to them, because I heard they will tend to return to good places of food. I never saw him again after that day.

Ronin, have not spoken with Fish and Game. Locals believe we are going to have an early winter.

The only time these guys are aggresive to humans is when the little ones are around. I still will keep a nice distance between us.

84porsche, thats the front yard. We are on 16 acres, roughly 900 ft from the road and then mostly surronded by 125 acres of conservation land. Meaning no one can build on it. Really nice spot.

I went camping near Yosemite last month. We were about 10,000 ft so the campsite, while full, was far away from the valley. Anyway, the night before we arrived a bear and cubs wandered into the campgrounds and someone tried to chase them away. Don't know if the mom bear thought her cubs were being threatened but she attacked. Poor camper had his shoulder torn off. When we left, rangers were hunting those bears down as there have been other reports. I guess the cubs have taken on mom's demeanor.

Brown/Black Bears are usually wussies, except when cubs are involved. With cubs involved, black bear sows are as dangerous as any creature. Period. For this reason, it's always a smart idea to distance yourself from them. Even if you cannot see cubs, they may be around.

Grizzlies are just plain dangerous. Cubs or no cubs, they are just plain mean.
