And, as has been raised before, driving is a "privilege" not a "right" anyway, so as far as your attempt to hide behind "freedom" and the "American way" as excuses for driving around in a gigantic extended middle finger at the rest of us, I ain't buying it. If you can give a valid reason that you absolutely need an SUV then let's hear it. There's absolutely nothing they can do that another class of vehicle can't do equally well or better, without being such a snub at the rest of society. I find it interesting that so many SUV types buy them because "they keep my kids safe" while at the same time depleting the resources and polluting the air of the world they're leaving for them to "enjoy" after being brought up by such insightful parents. What a hypocritical stink-load. SUVs. Bah.

Ok, well I'll concede the point on the cost of freedom and that there are laws. Almost every aspect of daily life is regulated in some way or another. The key is how much regulation is there and how is it influenced.
With that said, again, this is a free country. If I want to I go buy a Hummer tonight and drive it around in circles burning up gas. There are those that would like to use laws/regulations to limit my ability to do so. Enviros come at this from several angles. One is gas mileage, next is pollution concerns and the other is safety. The end goal is to "ban" SUVs and then force people to use vehicles (cars, bicycles, whatever) that THEY think people should use. If that happens my freedom to choose what I want to drive would be limited. I would be less free. Right now that is not the case... Bravado? No, not me. It just seems like everything that is fun is either taxed or regulated to death in this country anymore. Except powerboats. No speed limits on the open water. Your speed is only limited by the size of your wallet. It's one of the reasons that I've thought about getting out of porsches. They are fun and fast to drive...but only for short amounts of time...otherwise one could end up in jail. Maybe I should try driving on the track. And I agree that driving is a privilege and not a right. But if I obey the speed limit, don't drink and drive or smoke dope and drive, why should someone else make the decision about the vehicle that I buy with my own money? Why does the government need to make choices for the people? I don't see how driving a SUV is a "snub at the rest of society?" What is the difference between an SUV and V-8 full sized station wagons from the 60s, 70s and 80s? Bigger tires? Seems like people would have more to do with their lives than be "offended" by the truck someone drives. Purpose of an SUV. I would use one to tow a powerboat from my house to the boat ramp with my family in the car, in comfort. What's so damn offensive about that? And why don't the SUV haters go after pickup truck owners? Are the two extra doors and the hatch back the problem? The leather seats? What? "Depleting resources and polluting the air." Well if you want to save the world sell your polluting 911 and buy an electric car. It's just like the vegitarians with the leather shoes. Seems like every other 911 owner is driving around with SSI exhaust and no cat. Shouldn't we lock these people up? And let me ask you this, if I have an SUV that gets 10mpg and I drive it 1000 miles a month, and someone else owns a honda that gets 30mpg and drives 3000 miles a month, what's the difference? I think you could also argue that SUV owners are making a greater contribution to society. Why? Well they are paying more in state/federal gasoline taxes to support the country's infrastructure. Remember the rich pay most all of the taxes in this country.

Je$us,
All he asked for was an opinion on what kind of SUV he should buy. Don't make this an SUV's are bad thread. If thats what you need, do a search, and add your comments to those threads. Bill I think you should get a Honda Pilot. Like the MDX but cheaper. |

Just to fan the fires though, I have a new Jeep Liberty that my company gave me to drive to the airport. My wife wont even ride in the thing and it is free so in the end the only reason "we" need an SUV is that she wants one. Oh and she is a John Kerry supporting tree hugging liberal but only wants to be seen in an MBZ, no real logic there ![]()

Now I know why they say air cool owners are A$$ Holes. Look at the things said about the drivers of these wonderful vehicles - suvs. Without my suv and all the ever slow moving gas sucking trucks, I wouldn't have a chance to own a 911. Without meeting these suv drivers, how can you judge them. But, it is acceptable if you tow your really cool Porsche to the track with an suv.
I can't understand why some on this board call a Chevy white trash motor. Aren't the prople who built Porsche motors white also? There parents must, at one time, own an American made car. Does that make them trash also? Japanese imports, ricers? I think ricer is a Mexican made car. I understand the Mexican eat a lot of rice. All he wanted was our opinion on which suv, now we're calling his wife, all suv drivers, stupid. How does that make her feel. What's next? No fat chicks in Porsches? |

For hauling things, depending on the size / volume of the stuff you need to carry I'd suggest either a van, minivan, wagon-style car (the BMW 540 wagon is particuarly nice - and cool), or possibly a pickup. SUV = not needed once again.

SUV=good.
SUVs are nothing new--they have been around since the early 60's.
