What's remarkable was that sons of the rich and powerful almost never went to Vietnam (witness the one member in over two dozen in the Bush administration who actually served in one of the three branches of the active military).
Clinton didn't go, and he was criticized endlessly for it by people like those in this administration who didn't go, either. Kerry, like about half the country, supported the war at first. There in Vietnam, he discovered it wasn't neat & tidy, but involved killing enemies who didn't wear uniforms and might not always have been enemies. Anyone who would find that to be a good situation would need his head checked.
