Tonight it's a beautiful world
Anyone watch the opening ceremonies? People of nearly every nation on earth stood together in one spot.
Now that's what humanity should be about. ![]()

Hmm, money and competition, isn't that what the world is about already?
At least at the olympics when one side doesn't like the other bombing the competition is not an option so in that way it is a bit better than the way the real world operates. |

Gee 350, that's cynical.
The only downside is Bob Costas' commentary. I truly can't stand that guy. Katie Couric isn't far behind... ![]()

You're both right. The Olympic's can and do promote Peace through athletics, transcending borders and racial/cultural differences. My Father was a part of that in the 50's and 60's. But lately, the money is tainting an otherwise worthy and noble effort.
Watching NBC's coverage of the Olympics is indeed painful, and kills the viewing enjoyment for me. I hope the Games in Athens come off without a hitch, and everyone retuns home safely.......

The Olympics are a wonderful thing. It is good competition among many world nations. I was only 4 when the Olympics were in Los Angeles and I remember my Dad coming home in his Olympic colors from work every night during that summer and it was the most meaningful thing. It is competition without weapons and bombs. It is good to have things that promote humanity and good will.

Didn't the opening cerimonies used to be just all the athletes marching into the stadium? I think it started at 8PM last night. Watched 5 minutes of it, then went out and started a campfire by the lake. Several drinks and a cigar later, I walk in, it's after 11PM and these things are STILL going on!! My god, just get to the events ..... while we're young, man. While we're young.

With all the steroid controversy, the political posturing, and the current state of the world, I think the Olympics are a waste of time and money. I know I sound like Super Cynic, but when I saw that the Iranian judo champion quit the games rather than attend his first Olympic match against an opponent from Isreal, all that talk about "peace and brotherhood" just went right out the window.
I do hope the games come off without the terrorist idiots trying anything. By the way, NBC's "second unit" coverage in Hi-Def is an embarassment. Costas and Kouric look like pros by comparison. |
