This is an old thread, but I just watched the Oct 13 show on Tivo -
OH MAN, that was a great surprise at the end! I'm starting to really get into this show. I really thought that older guy was going to be some James Bond type, but he's so human...there are so many directions it could take.

I thought the whole show looked bogus. I couldn't bring myself to watch after I saw a plane breaking apart in mid-air and people surving. Way too unrealistic.

Well, the older guy turned out to have been in a wheelchair until the crash. Somehow he could get up and walk. It sounds ultra-cheesy when I type it, but it was done in a very touching way. Everyone else on the plane lost everything, and he actually gained something.

Well, yeah, the way you type it does sound cheesy!

The show starts with a flashback to the crash, with Locke waking up on the beach. He's staring at his right foot, where his shoe is missing. He appears to be in shock, watching his toes wriggling while the plane burns and people run around and Shannon (true to form) stands around just screaming. Slowly, he sits up, finds his shoe, puts it and stands up. He seems dazed, moving slowly and gingerly, staring at his feet the way stoners stare out their hands after a few hits. Then Jack yells for him to come help move the injured marshal from the wreckage, and the show begins. As the show progresses, we see that Locke is some white-collar work with a younger guy that's his jerk of a boss, while he plays war-games on his lunch hour, earning him the nickname "Colonel." He talks about going to Australia for a "walkabout," a grueling trip through the outback. His boss says scornfully that Locke can't handle the trip, and Locke says "Don't tell me what I can't do."

In the final flashback, we see Locke being turned down for the walkabout, and learn why: he's a paraplegic, and never told the trip organizers. He was flying back home when the crash occurred.

In other story threads: the lost ones are awakened by Vincent the yellow lab and discover some animals are rummaging in the wreckage of the ship. They are wild boar. Jack tells everyone that the corpses are a health risk and will attract more animals and they need to burn the fuselage.

Meanwhile, Hurley announces that the food from the plane has been depleted. Locke organizes a hunting party to go for the wild boar, revealing that he's got a suitcase full of high-quality hunting knives and a head full of hunting lore from when he studied for his aborted trip. Kate (who reveals she's a vegetarian) and that guy from the last 2 Matrix movies with the kid go along. On the trip, the latter guy is gored by a boar when he starts blabbing during the hunt. Kate takes him back to the beach, while Locke continues alone. Later, Kate sees whatever huge-ass thing is in the jungle moving towards Lockes location and reports him dead on returning to camp. We see Locke standing in a clearing, looking up at something as it approaches him.

The lost ones are rummaging through belongings from the fuselage, planning a memorial for the lucky ones - the ones that died in the crash. Jack avoids particpating, to the puzzlement of others. Jack also thinks he's seeing things - he twice spots someone in a suit watching him from the edge of the jungle, only to have the person vanish if he glances away.

During the memorial, Locke returns with a dead boar, covered in blood but otherwise unharmed. When asked if he saw the creature, he says no. He looks into the flames of the burning fuselage and sees his wheelchair, and smiles enigmatically.

I like the show, but I'm on the fence about continuing to watch. I don't like that everyone on the show keeps seeing strange things or gets new information and just clams up about it. Half the survivors could likely get them off the fricking island if they'd discuss what they knew and investigate. Instead, they all plot separately.

I also don't like the idea of something as big as a T-rex running around and no one's seen it clearly (except Locke - maybe) and not bothered to look for it. How big can the island be, and how hard can it be to find giant footprints?

Abrams has good ideas, but Alias lost me due to it's wild inconsistencies (one weak, Syd's a superspy, the next ep she's crippled by a splinter); this show could do that as well. After sweeps, I'll either stick with it or drop it.

I just heard that one of my friends here is in the show...guess it's time to start watching to see how she's doing. When does it usually come on?
