Intellect plays as large a role as perception and ideals with these guys. In the case of a terrorist, what is lacking in intellect, is probably replaced with fanaticism.
Who said anything about negotiating w/ them?? This is where this discussion always takes a strange detour, and it's very frustrating. Understanding your enemy who wants to kill you is not the same as having a ******* block party w/ them, and it's just good sense from a tactical POV.

Block party? How can you say that? I have to say no one anywhere around the world could have been any more effective.

How do you understand someone who wants to die and take as many (in this case) children with them? You either negotiate, storm forth or let the children die. In Beslan's case, few seemed to realize the extent of the Chechan fighters' desperation. That's why the Russian army was stymied. It was no block party. What you didn't see was 1) the blown up children; and 2) the blown up terrorists who either blew themselves up, or was blown up by the Russian army.

And yes, Putin himself engaged in negotiation. Now as to whether he would have delivered their demands - no one knows. But someone had to negotiate, and part of negotiation is understanding the opposite side; i.e. enemy.

Hey, I'm happy with that if they are! Let's make them all martyrs! If they have terrorist tendencies....please, step right up...lets take care of them now....save coming back to mop them up later.

Do you seriously believe that we are hunting down and "eliminating" all of the big terrorists, and that all of the millions of others in this ideological struggle will just decide that the U.S., George Bush, and Russia are the new warlords to be respected?? Do you really believe this? Tell me that it isn't so.

Putin's "methods" will have the same wonderful results that Israel's have had in "eliminating terrorism", and not incidentally make him the world's biggest terrorist, which is always a wonderful thing when trying to influence the minds of a huge population that considers the "ends justify the means" when dealing w/ (their perception of) pure evil.

It is also ironic that you mention Abu Ghraib w/o so much as the faintest clue that it did more to make us unsafe than all of the stupid moves of the past several years. If you are a true indication of the density of the Republican/right-wing/AM radio mindset, all I can say is that you are a serious danger to peace.
Isn't it funny that the truly clueless are always the ones to attack another's education or intelligence? Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the argument was a bit above your head? Doth the emperor wear no clothes? Why else would he need the "talking points" and name calling to make his point? Whatever it is....
