LA People - please identify this smell

What the hell is the source of that foul, rotten stench that seems to be there every morning on the 710 north from just before the connection with the 5 / 60 through the east LA interchange, to about where the 5 splits off?

I'm trying to find out if it's one particular plant / business / landfill / toxic waste dump or whatever so I can get in touch with the appropriate state regulatory agency, but I have no idea what the source is.

If anybody else drives through that area in the morning, you'll know what I'm talking about. It kind of smells like a combination of rotting eggs, unbathed homeless person, and Mexican bathroom. It's absolutely revolting to the point I deviate about 10 miles (and considerable extra time) out of the way and either go up the 710 to the 91 or 105, then west to the 110 through downtown. It's that bad.

What on earth makes this stink? People complain about how bad the smell is on the SOUTH part of the 710 from the refineries; I think this one on the north end of it is far worse, personally.

And yes, I shower.

Would that be a meat packing-slaughter house smell? There are some areas on the outskirts of LA were the slaughter house smell can throw you into involuntary convulsions. Also some of those tractor trailers with the canvassed over payloads, full of slaughter house byproducts are also increadibly reviling. Once I had the incredible misfortune to peer into one of those payloads. It's enough to convert you to vegetarianism.

This is the funniest thread of the month! I laughed for about 2 minutes.

Good luck finding the source.

serge

p.s. I can smell it here in Italy but it's in the evening... the time difference, you understand?

Yup, sounds (smells) like LA.

The worst traffic+olefactory experience I ever endured was getting stuck in traffic behind a rendering truck in 100+ heat for about 1/2 hour. Ug.

I think its the homeless living under the underpasses on the LA River. I know there aren't any active landfills right there.

Yeah, hot mops are downright over-perfumed call girls compared to rendering trucks. And yes, I think it is the meat packing plant, close to Taylor Yard where all the trains are. When I used to do graveyard at the LA Times, I'd come out and literally smell blood in the air. And that's three miles west of where they're packing meat.

I mean, it's either that or LA County jail, where they're also probably packing meat...

OH ho, I just remebered a long forgotten smell from my youth that beats the rendering plant. The dreaded Egg City in Moorpark. Try to imagine thousands of chickens laying eggs on a a 100+ degree day, then having a wafting odorous cloud of that permeating for miles. They eventually shut the place down..

I think I can top most of those. I used to work in an aluminum foundry. Next door was the place where they cremated animals found on the road and from the pound. Don't know why, but we always seemed to be downwind on burn day.

You know what really wreaks in the San Fernando Valley - the freakin' LA River. What is up with that? And so close to residential areas throughout the whole valley! The water moves so slowly (or doesn't move at all), that plant life is growing inside it. Bleech! The river smells like the ***** that's in it, floating around like Mr. Hankey, and waiting to fall into your swim trunks at the beach - or down your throat...

I just spent the weekend in San Fran.... it's kinda nice. (It's definitely NOT like LA.) It's so nice, that I'm considering moving, although that may take some time.

I don't know if you can call it water, like H20. But there is some type of liquid, yes

If you're not living on the edge - you're taking up too much space.
