Maybe I should be ashamed of my ignorance but I was not familiar with Boiled Frog Syndrome so I looked it up. For those similarly situated it goes something like this if you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, he’ll jump out. But if you place a frog into a pot of lukewarm water and slowly turn up the heat, it will boil to death.
Learn something new every day. Thanks Hammer. |
No Hammer, not under the radar; I think your comment says it all. I hate to pick on the NBA again, but what a perfect example. Where did they start going bad? No one can put their finger on it. One thing is certain, though. If you took today's typical on-court behaviour and language back to the '60's or '70's, people would have been outraged. It never would have flown. Now the NBA is facing declining attendance and T.V. audiences. A lot of people won't bring their kids anywhere near that display of foul-mouthed gangsta wannabes. If they would have exercised the same "unreasonable" diligence as NASCAR is now, they would not be in this mess.

I think society as a whole is headed that way. Take anything...network TV, Radio, Movies, whatever and compare it with the same 10 or 20 years ago. Big difference. But the changes have come so slowly and steadily they are almost invisible. One degree at a time.
I use profanity as well, particularly on inantimate objects like tie rod ends..... :D |
Jeff,
Regarding the NBA, sure some of the decline in attendence of kids is due to poor on and off court behavior, but how much is it because of skyrocketing ticket costs. It's at least a $200 night for a family of 4 to attend an NBA game. It is interesting to see how TV has changed over the past 10+ years. I don't have kids so I don't care, but I have to say I have changed the channel when watching TV with some small nephews and nieces. |

I like the old days of the SW american indians version of basketball(Hopi?,Apache?,?).
After victory, it was common for the fans of the winning side to loot the losers side at will. Probably not a lot of swearing, more like a "ARGGGGHHHH"...... Hahaha.... If they really wanted to elevate societal standards, they'd stop 20+ cars driving fast in a very little circle. |
The difference between crap and *****?
The origin of crap is still being debated. Possible sources include the Dutch Krappe; Low German krape, meaning a vile and inedible fish; Middle English crappe, and Thomas Crapper. Where crap is derived from Crapper, it is by a process know as, pardon the pun, a back formation. The World War I doughboys passing through England brought together Crapper's name and the toilet. They saw the words T. Crapper---Chelsea printed on the tanks and coined the slang "crapper" meaning toilet. *****? Certain types of manure used to be transported (as everything was back then) by ship. In dry form it weighs a lot less, but once water (at sea) hit it. It not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen; methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern. BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was discovered what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure where always stamped with the term "S.H.I.T" on them which meant to the sailors to "Ship High In Transit." In other words, high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. You DID ask. :D |
As to the F word:
http://www.lyrics.ly/lyrics.php/Adam+Sandler/Lyrics/Uses+Of+The+Word+**** Do a search for the mp3, it has a pious narative over a very stately classical instramental. Thanks Curt. I've heard the SF sewage treatment plant water pumps at ocean/great highway are run entirely off the excess byprocuct gasses. |
