Props to the 5th Armed Service

Quote:
In its third century of astonishing service, the United States Coast stands almost unsung. Its singular reputation as the worldwide emblem of rescue at sea has overshadowed the unbelievable scope of its worldwide feats as America's fifth armed force.
OK, maybe I'm a bit biased being a boater all my life and having 2 relatives who serve; but I'd like to urge you all to set aside 2 hours this Thursday night to watch this special on the History Channel:

November 11, 2004 9pm and 1am "A History of the United States Coast Guard"

They are an amazing group of Americans who work 24/7/365 for each and every one of us during peace and war, hurricane and calm, doing a dizzying array of duties yet rarely get a second thought or any regognition for their service. Certainly worth a couple hours time to learn who these great folks are.

Finally, a post of yours that I can agree with.

As a long time boater and sailor, much props to the coast guard.

If there was compulsory military service they would be my service of choice.

As a proud honorably discharged member of the USCG, I am proud of all those who serve and have served in this small but dedicated band of brothers and sisters.

Semper Paratus!!

As Navy, I enjoy harassing the "JV Navy." We like to joke with them on the radio about whether or not they have their training wheels installed. All in all, they've pulled through for us more than once -- the USCG gives our boats escorts and provides traffic avoidance services; totally invaluable for us. I like their respect and professionalism, not to mention their renown for seamanship. My hat's off to the Coasties.

Thanx, DJM

Part of my training was in landing craft. We used to tell the jarheads at LaJune that they only had to get shot at one way...We had to go back for more....All in fun....

THey used to refer to us as "Uncle Sam's Yacht Club"

I recently worked for over a year on a massive project for the USCG at HQ. Great people over there.

As a Navy helicopter pilot, I am ALWAYS amazed at the heroics performed by the Coast Guard helo crews, especially the SAR swimmers, as they ply their honorable trade.
Seems that no one ever needs to be rescued in calm seas!
