Thanks......to all of you guys. It's hard to not make this seem like a big deal, cause in a way I guess it is. But really, if the hardest thing in my life right now is having to handle nic withdrawl then I got a pretty charmed existance going I'de say.

I smoked for about 10 years. To quit I switched to chewing tobacco. That lasted another 10 years. I quit cold turkey last September. Lots and lots of gum. Keep it up. There is no such thing as just one more.

You should have been there when my life-long smoking mom, after being diagnosed with metastatic lung tumors in her brain, told me that if she had know that lung tumors could go to the brain (which they invariably do) she would of quit a long time ago. Trust me, this is not a conversation you want to have.

I wish anyone and everyone the best in their efforts to quit smoking. There are so many upsides to quitting (living longer and having more money to play with are just two of them) and no downsides I can think of.

So lean on family and friends, get a patch, work out, scream, pray, abuse lollipops, do what ever you need to get through.

We have had wonderfull success with bupropion hydrochloride.

Patches and gum have high failure rates but I have seen MANY 2 pack a day smokers quit with the pills.

Good luck on quitting! Its the best present you can give yourself!

Don't know anything about bupropion hydrochloride, but I do know that I can't go home tonight(till midnight or so). I've already ripped the head off one person here at work (my brother and I apologized) and don't wan't to take it out on my wife. If I go home I'll spaz, so I'm gonna go down and have a few cold ones during the Auburn game. The beer won't make me smoke, I am pretty sure of that. Will report back tomorrow.

That's the ticket!

Whenever someone tells me "I'm going to try to quit smoking" I assume they will fail. The word "try" allows for the possibility.

On the other hand, when folks say "I quit!" the chances of success are much greater.

Hang in there Daddy. Be tough. Do not allow yourself the option of failure and you will succeed!

Ditto on the Wellbutrin. Maybe Catapres. My mom used Wellbutrin and hypnosis to quit a 30 year habit. Which one worked? Doesn't matter! Good luck.

I had to watch my Dad slowly pass away last year from smoking related illnesses. Gladly, he never knew he had cancer as they only found it after he had passed. Trust me, that is something no son or daughter should ever have to go through. Sorry to bring everyone down but it's been almost a year now since I lost my Dad.
You can do it, Len. He!!, I don't even know you and I want you make it.

I envisioned myself in the docs office when he says "I think you should sit down". Again, totally wigged out, I got chills. Like I said, I HAVE to do this.
Turning points in our lives come in different packages. For some, it's an illness. Others, from an accident. Still others come from a vision. Continue to hold on to this vision when the times are difficult. Let those around you know that you are going through a rough patch with this. Prayer doesn't hurt.

All the best.

I know a coworker who quit "cold turkey" about 4 months ago and he's doing great! It's got to be tough, but the health benefits alone make the effort worth it! This is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, nobody else can do it for you!

If you want to take an intermediate step, i.e cut down, I have a suggestion for you smokers out there... Instead of buying a pack of smokes, buy a bag of roll-your-own tobacco and do just that. I smoke Bali-Shag, imported by C.W. Obel.

Since it takes time to roll a smoke and you can't do it while driving (takes two hands!), I've found that it cuts down on my smoking significantly. I smoke maybe 4 cigarettes now a day. When I do smoke them, they don't burn as fast and I smoke them about 1/2 way down before I throw the nice biodegradable leavings away in a trash can. The quality of the tobacco is leaps and bounds beyond the store-bought crap, too.

You get about 50 cigarettes out of a $4.99 pouch.

Shizzle, now I'm jonesing for a smoke.......
and a drink......

Question: How many here have never bought a carton of cigarettes because it would confirm (to yourself) that you're a (hooked) smoker....kinda want to quit......buy one packat a time.....

Of course, Only time I would buy a carton was when going out of town. I would otherwise buy three single packs just about every single day for the last decade or so. That way I could quit any day, right?

For those keeping score, I currently have a mild case of the shakes and my armpits are sweating like a freak. I feel like a labrat

lendaddy,

Get some sunflower seeds (in the shell) or some nuts and that will keep your hands busy. Get a straw and cut it to the size of a cigarette and put it in your mouth and draw on that. My coworker says these things helped me alot during the first week or so.

Interesting ideas Art. Are you saying that you have little recollection of the time-period and you need your co-workers to act as your memory?) That's funny.
