Just One Senator ... An Open Letter to the U.S. Senate from Michael Moore

Dear Members of the U.S. Senate,

Welcome back! The 109th session of Congress has just begun. I'm watching you on C-SPAN right now and you all look so snap-happy and clean-faced. It's like the first day of school all over again, isn't it?

I have a favor to ask of you. Something isn't right with the vote from Ohio. Seems a lot of people didn't get to vote. And those who did, thousands of theirs weren't counted.

Does that seem right to you? I'm just asking. Forget about partisan politics for a moment and ask yourself if there is a more basic right, in a democracy, than the right of the people to vote AND have ALL their votes counted.

Now, I know a lot of you wish this little problem of Ohio would just go away. And many of you who wish this are Democrats. You just want to move on (no pun intended!). I can't say I blame you. It's rough to lose two elections in a row when the first one you actually won and the second one you should have won. And it seems this time around, about 3 million more Americans preferred to continue the war in Iraq and give the rich more tax breaks than those who didn't. No sense living in denial about that.

But something isn't right in Ohio and more than a dozen members of the House of Representatives believe it is worth investigating.

So on Thursday at 1:00pm, Rep. John Conyers of Detroit will rise and object to the vote count in Ohio. According to the laws of this land, he will not be allowed to speak unless at least one of you -- one member of the United States Senate -- agrees to let him have the floor.

A very embarrassing moment during the last session of Congress occurred in the first week when none of you would allow the members of Congress who were black to have the floor to object to the Florida vote count. Remember that? You thought no one would ever notice, didn't you? You certainly lucked out that night when the networks decided not to show how you shut down every single member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

No such luck this year. Everyone now knows about that moment of shame. Thank you? You’re welcome.

But this Thursday, at 1:00pm, you will have a chance to redeem yourself.

Congressman Conyers and a dozen other members of Congress have some serious questions about how the Republican secretary of state in Ohio (who was also the state’s co-chair of Bush’s reelection campaign) conducted the election on November 2. The list of possible offenses of how voters were denied access to the polls and how over a hundred thousand of their votes have yet to be counted is more than worthy of your consideration. It may not change the outcome, but you have a supreme responsibility to make sure that EVERY vote is counted. Who amongst you would disagree with that?

If you would like to read more about the specific charges, I ask that you read these two links: “Senators Should Object to Ohio Vote” —by Jesse Jackson and “Ten Preliminary Reasons Why the Bush Vote Does Not Compute, and Why Congress Must Investigate Rather Than Certify the Electoral College”. I am asking everyone on my mailing list to send you a letter joining me in this call to you to do your job and investigate what happened before you certify the vote.

It only takes one member of the House and one member of the Senate to stop the acceptance of the Electoral College vote and force a legitimate debate and investigation. Do you know why this provision is set in stone in our nation’s laws? I mean, why would we allow just two officials in a body of 535 members to throw a wrench into the works? The law exists because nothing is more sacred than the integrity of the ballot box and if there is ANY possibility of fraud or incompetence, then it MUST be addressed. Because if we don't have the vote, what are we left with?

C'mon Senators! Especially you Democrats. Here is your one shining moment of courage. Will you allow the gavel to come down on our black members of Congress once again? Or will you stand up for their right to object?

We will all be watching.

Yours,

Michael Moore

Hmmmm, I wonder why he didn't ask them to check out the voting in Washington State...it seems they are counting more ballots than there are people who voted. Oh well, we'll leave it all up to the officials. They'll keep counting until the election turns out right...or left, depending on who is in charge.

I agree with Mr. Moore that it is simply appalling that there is even the slightest possibility that there are uncounted votes. Could some one implore him to help us out here in Washington State? It seems we have a large number of voters that did not receive their absentee ballots in time to allow them to be returned before the deadline. Probably something to do with the great distances involved; these voters are serving in Iraq and Afganistan. As many of you are aware, we have a very close race for Governor. I'm sure our several thousand uncounted votes from military personel overseas would clear things up once and for all. Where are you when we need you, Mr. Moore?

I'm sure the votes were all counted in OH, heck, computers counted them and they always work as expected, good thing there was a paper trail just to be sure. Just kidding, really, but how the f*ck does something like that even happen? The IRS has a paper trail... and so on. Geez!

Anyway, I'd be willing to bet that if we had the election again, right now, it'd be a landslide against Bush after his political capital spending spree in the last 60 days, yeah, Kerry didn't do much for me, but Bush is downright dangerous to our country as the Framers formed it and only a slightly better President than Grant.

there, I said it, pile on, but I'm going to bed now, long day, need to be up early and finish the first draft of the business plan. Hitchens debated Moore at the Telluride film festival, and made these comments in a recent interview:

"I have noticed in observing and debating him that he is an addict of crowd-pleasing and demagogy, and also an addict of "secret financial government" rhetoric. He also affects a certain plebeian and blue-collar style. When he thinks it will work, he will pretend to believe that "American jobs" are migrating to Mexico, or that "American boys" are being duped into war by hidden cabals. This combination of nativism and populism (stirred in with a nauseating dose of sentimentality and an absolutely breath-taking contempt for objective truth) reminds me very much of the dolts who joined the SA. But then, those guys were probably as surprised as their dumb Stalinist counterparts when the Hitler-Stalin pact was signed.

With much of the remaining Left, I have to say, there is a certain immunity from Moore's gruesome posturing, if only because they don't think it was a good idea to have General Motors, or the city of Flint, Michigan, in the first place. And some of them are genuine pacifists, while Moore is an open supporter of the Islamist death-squads in Iraq."

Clearly it is not possible to have a less credible or more fatuous sponsor for a cause, unless of course your sponsor is Jesse Jackson.

At what point will the Democratic party stop letting Michael Moore and Jesse Jackson further soil their reputation? Simply spewing forth information and portraying it as the truth will only get you so far, and it would appear that this time it wasn't far enough.

Keep it up MM. You are the conservative's secret weapon. Every time conservatives have the slightest doubt....there is MM to remind them of how fruity/downright anti-american the other side can be.

Except that the other side isn't really blathering idiots. The other side is really a lot of sane normal people. I mean, I hate to admit it, but a lot of people who voted "D" are really intelligent people, closely in touch with reality, and utterly encumbered by fact -- totally unlike Moore. (sigh)

I mean, I voted Republican in both Presidential and State elections, but to classify all Democrats as being Moore-like is to classify all Christians as Westboro Baptists (godhatesfags.com) or to classify all Porsches as Yugo-like.

There is room for debate there. although some Dems reject him, he has certainly been embraced by the overall Demoncratic party and Hollywood elite..Pres. Carter, etc..In fact, many seeming sane folks have quoted him regularly on this BBS...even this thread. He seems to be quite mainstream in his party, whereas few conservatives would do the same with the Westboro folks and, in fact, distance themselves from them. You must admit, he makes a great liberal poster child. He clearly has a following (certainly not conservatives), as millions pay to see his trashy films which are totally unencumbered with fact.

Matt, this is the entire foundation for Fox, well this and Paris Hilton and every other lowest common denominator show they can think of. It's working for them, I think its worth giving it a try.

The Senate also got a letter from Timmy Smith, a 3rd grader at Washington Elementary School. It has about the same relevance as a letter from Mikey Moore ...... Bush won. Get over it.

Reagan, Bush Sr., etc. those are people worth getting over, and easily, because they were good men, good Presidents in their own way.

What makes this so hard is seeing your president on TV and being embarassed to be an American.
