Moving to Denver-Need Colorado Pelican Advice
I'm relocating to Denver this weekend, got the official word from work on Monday. Only one week notice but that is no problem because I have no wife, no kids, am a former Army brat, and I like to ski.
I'll be working near I 70 and 270 in the northern part of the city. I need to find an apartment but I don't know much about Denver or traffic. Here's what I need......I want to live within 20 minutes from work but I don't want to be in the 'hood. Through, rent.com and apartments.com, I've printed some leads on apartments in the area. Westminster, Thornton and Aurora seem to be the location of the bulk of these apartments. I'm going to live in a hotel for a week before I decide on an apartment and area. Does anyone have any thoughts on these areas or Denver in general? Traffic? Can I drive my 944 in the winter? Bars? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Bars and Cars do not mix in Denver. Move where you can have some sort of socal life. The cops are like LAPD with Gestapo training. The DUI limit is so low, you can get in big trouble for 2 beers.

Don't know much other than watch the altitude for the first few days.
Generally a bad idea to get off the plane, drive straight to a mountain while indulging in "activities that can impair your functionality", take a lift to the peak and expect to ski more than 1/3rd the way down before passing out requiring application of an oxygen mask by the ski patrol. You must try out "THE MINT" in Silverthorne, steak place, you walk into a butcher shop setting, pick your steak from the display case, think $16 was the cheapest one, and proceed upstairs where you cook it yourself over a giant communal grill and the only "side" that comes with it is Texas Toast, if you want a couple of peas in a bowl thats another $4. What a racket that is. Scott

The DUI limit in Texas is .08- I think that is as low as it gets in the US so I'm used to that. However alcohol tolerances decrease as elevations rise from what I've heard....
I'll have to check out the Mint. Thanks for the heads up.

The MINT! classic! Don't go there starving, your eyes are bigger than your stomach and you have the guy cut you a side of beef that will never cook on that grill up there. I stood there for hours with that little sponge marinade thing. Too funny. I was def. over .08 after waiting for that sucker to cook, and it was still raw. Sorry about the threadjack.

I would go to Century21.com and look at housing prices. The better neighborhoods usually maintain a higher resale value. The apartments near such neighborhoods should be more up-scale and more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Good luck with your move. Dave

LMAO, I forgot about how long it took to cook.
I'm pretty sure it was the Mint and my steak was raw also. Think I ate a whole loaf of Texas Toast waiting for that thing to stop mooing. Scott

Westminster is good. Traffic, no matter where you are, sucks. As for driving the 944....today is sunny and 70...damn, I miss my Boxster......

I am surprised there are not more posters to this thread. Lots of Pelicanheads out there.. A good PCA chapter too, BTW.
Tham - try posting on the "911 Tech Forum" link. You can usually get a good conversation going by asking about the best Denver Metro area mechanic. (Jon Eisenbud, I would say..) It is a good town, decent food, lots of Texans. A little bit transient these days, most folks seem to be from someplace else. People seem to grade you on how long you lived there, how good a skier you are and how commited to the Denver lifestyle. As a New Yorker, I found this utterly ridiculous, but then again, I'm not there anymore.. Look around before you rent and good luck. Last edited by gaijindabe; 01-20-2005 at 02:24 PM.. |
