Smoker rant

We went to a party yerterday. We were around 20 guests, including 8 kids, but only 1 smoker. The problem is that this **** was burning 1 light after the other for the whole evening.
We did try everything , from slight remarks to bad jokes but this guy was convinced that smoking was his right. It was his wife birthday and we left early because we couldn't take it anymore.

Ok I feel better now.

Ain't it wonderful how public opinion has changed in less than 25 years to revile the smoker? Nasty, inconsiderate, selfish, bad smelling, etc. But even further back, advertisements for cigarettes included testimonials by Doctors.

Yeah, smoking is bad for you. But, since I have to conclude that this was the smoker's house, he probably (and somewhat selfishly) assumed he had the right to smoke there. If it was not his home, the owner would have had the right to make him at least go outside.

Now....is there some other nasty habit we, as a society, should pinpoint for extinction?

Whole new topic for discussion.

sorry pwd72s ..... anyone who chain smokes in his own home with 8 kids around is, as you put it - an ****. Implying that Serge 914 is somehow an "****" doesn't cut it.

maybe if someone at the party was polite and asked him to smoke outside or something......some sort of comprimise.

but instead of getting to the point it sounds like no one had the balls or courtesy to politely bring it up to the smoker, instead people ***** and whine and go home early.

you'd be amazed at the results when someone gets asked politely to do something compared to rude remarks.

if I smoked and a guest asked me to smoke outside in my own house, i can tell you right now, I'm not going to be the one going outside.

It might have been *polite* of him to consider the comfort of everyone else, but unless you live in Boulder, CO, people still have the right to smoke in their own houses.

As a non smoker, and a former smoker. I can say that when you smoke you don't realize how bad it smells, and how much it can pollute others breathing space, someone should have politely told him that his smoking is offensive to others. It is funny how I would wake up and smoke 2 or 3 cigarettes while I drank my coffee in the morning, and now when someone is smoking near me I can barely stand the smell.

So do the words to, too and two. I think, perhaps, your point is lost on me.

His house=it's ok-he stays, you make the correct decision to leave and spare your lungs

Someone else's=bad-he leaves by his own accord or otherwise.

I hate smoking, and actually will not be friends with smokers. I see it as a weakness that only the pathetic will subject themselves and others to. People that smoke in front of their children should be horse-whipped. BUT-I believe anyone has the right to do to themselves as they wish. If it's a restaurant that allows smoking-so be it. I simply won't patronize. In a home-hey, I'll leave and never return. Darwinism at work.

When you go to someone's house, and they do something rude, you don't go back. Everyone has their own threshold, and these things work themselves out over time.

If the guy really is a chainsmoking pig, wallowing in a filthy, stinky house, then ultimately he'll end up alone there buried in a disgusting pile of ashes and butts.

If you're the one who's oversensitive and everyone else doesn't mind, then you'll stay away and miss some good parties.

But you really can't do whatever you want, even in your own house. Think of all the things you could do a a party that might offend your guests. You don't do them, because you want to be a good host, and not offend your guests.

Bryan, do you enjoy testing your guests' tolerance? What other offensive things to you do because it's YOUR HOUSE? Maybe Edited - no need for such a graphic example? Sure, it's rude, but it's your house, right?

That's not really a fair analogy, at all, but since you mention it that way... I think it's funny that those who don't want 'big brother' watching in on them in their own homes are totally okay with taking away someone's freedom when it comes to smoking. Smoking is legal, waving your schlong around would be harassment on many levels and would be illegal... except in some social circles, I hear.

Personally, when I have guests over I go out of my way to make them comfortable... any good host would. Besides, I don't have a ton of friends and work to keep the ones I do have. (don't cry for me ) This guy must have a lot of friends, or he doesn't value the ones he does have. Sure it was disrespectful of him to continue something that his guests thought was annoying, but it's legal and it is his house.

It'd be more like if your daughter was having a slumber party or whatever they do these days, and you stayed around playing a cowbell loudly. That's going to annoy the hell out of them, but, hey... it's a cowbell.

Smoking ...bad. Drinking ...good. I don't get it. These days it seems it would be better to be a heroin addict than a smoker. I feel the same as Bryant. It's MY f ing house for christ sake. if you don't like me or my house because I smoke, then get out and don't come back. If you are that shallow to view me ONLY as a smoker and nothing about me or my friendship can overcome that ..well don't let my smoke stained door hit you in the **** as you leave. Where does this stop. Alcohol certainly ruins more lives than any other habit and yet it is still an acceptable thing. So what will you all do when driving anything BUT a hybrid car is the only acceptable and trendy thing? Will all you sheep be driving one just to please all your "friends"? Obviously none of you remember Hitler Youths. And YES I smoke.

OK I feel better now ;-)

Let me help you. Your smoke drifts over and gets in my kid's lungs at a restaurant. Your beer stays in it's glass. How about drunken driving you say? That IS illegal.

Don't get me wrong-I defend your right to slowly kill yourself. That's your choice. I simply choose not to be around smoke or people who do it.

PS-there are many who say drinking is bad-remember prohibition?

The other night, I was sitting in the casino...

drinking a margarita...

and someone sat down two machines from me and lit up. Jerk. (ah, the irony)

But seriously, I expect people to smoke at the casino, it goes hand in hand. What I don't like is that it burns my eyes and I go home smelling like smoke...

My drink doesn't effect anyone else hours after I have left... the smokers spouse doesn't cough for hours because I had a drink.

And you know what else I hate? Cats. You can't trust em. They look at you like they want to be petted, and then claw the hell outta ya. Little bas^&*%... Next thing we will get is cats that smoke... grrrrrrrr.
