Who here would just stand and watch?

In a disgusting display of apathy, 7 people stood by and watched this happen. Sad, sad, sad...

I've jumped out of moving vehicles to break up fights between people I didn't know. But I'm larger than most, and I couldn't seriously condemn a 5'4" woman (for example) for failing to step up to a 6'4" 300# berzerker.

That's just me.

And they posted the video for people to watch???

Seven people are enough to stop a 300 pound man, especially if taken by surprise. But it is hard to do!! Concealed carry laws are designed for this, but someone's life has to be in danger...

I'd hope that I would do something. I have before, but I was younger and stronger.

RickM 02-24-2005 09:34 AM

I'd say the fact that the assailant is 6'4" / 300lbs might have kept a few from opening their mouths. Remember the "actress" who posed the question "What are you going to do, shoot me?" when confronted with a few muggers. I'm sure she wished she kept her mouth shut.

The spectators may also know the guy who was beaten and thought he deserved it.

There are probably more factors involved in this incident than meet the eye.

rcecale 02-24-2005 09:42 AM

I don't know, man. I can't think of anyone I know that deserves to be beaten like that.

Had the big guy clocked the man and left it at that, I could deal with it. But the following beating? No way.

I suppose that may have to be an a$$-whipping I'd have to take, but I just don't think I could stand idly by and watch that happen to anyone. Not even a liberal! ;)

Keep an eye on this one though. Don't be surprised if you see a civil case come from this against the innocent bystanders who failed to get involved, and most definitely against the pizza place for not providing a safe place for this guy to order a pizza.

If anyone should have said something it would be the shop owner. Protected by a counter and near a phone....and probably liable to a degree.

Wonder what the good samaritan laws are there.

Jeff Higgins 02-24-2005 10:47 AM

Hmmm.... black man beating a white man senseless. If it had been the other way around, it would have been "racially motivated" and Jesse Jackson would be there by now crying out for justice. Randy, you are probably right about a case against the bystanders. It was probably a no-win situation for them, though. If they would have ganged up on the assailant, they would all be sitting in jail charged with a "hate crime" and Jesse WOULD be there by now.

speeder 02-24-2005 10:55 AM

At least he got caught, and thankfully the guy did not suffer even more serious, (or permanent), injuries. Still, that's an awful thing to happen. Now the bad guy in this can spend a few years in prison where his tough guy credentials will take a beating, hopefully. ;)

dtw 02-24-2005 10:58 AM

I've chased and cornered people fleeing from hit and run accidents (both blew way over the limit when the police arrived) on two separate occasions. Definitely wouldn't have let this go.

Moneyguy1 02-24-2005 11:01 AM

And no one there had a cell phone? Assistance at a distance....

That's strange, if true, with so many people literally have them surgically attached to themselves....

Drago 02-24-2005 11:11 AM

The new broadcast just kept showing the same clip over and over using defferent editing techniques to make it seem like the guy was taking the beating of his life.

I counted 4, maybe 5 punches tops.

Still sucks but I gotta say it looked to me like it was over very shortly after it started. Not much time for the people in the store to access the risk of stepping in.

Eric Mckenna 02-24-2005 11:23 AM

I don't think it's that people were scared of the big guy really it's just that the US has become so DAMN Sue happy if you even think about geting involved somehow the guy that was beating the little guy would sue you and MAYBE freaking WIN!..
Me.... I have been looking for a chance to break a F'ing chair over someones head as of late.. so I would have welcomed a sight like this! ;)
messing if those guys watching would have jumped the big man I am SURE they could have stopped it. just my .02 though

Big question is why is he cracking this guy's coconut?

- Did the beatee call him a name?
- Was he merely being bullied?
- Did he stiff him on a loan?
- Did he hit him first?
- Did he kick his sister at the school yard?
- Drug deal gone bad?

chibone_914 02-24-2005 11:29 AM

I would have jumped in, then explain to police why I had dislocated his shoulder , kicked out his knee and broken half his ribs.........http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/smileJap.gif

mattdavis11 02-24-2005 11:47 AM

Deal gone bad and bystanders are customers. "Where's my money for the lawn clippings?" 4 years wasn't enough if you ask me.

WOW! I watched the video that was sent to me from a buddy. the news clip was a seriously watered down version. Here's a list of some things they aren't showing:

1.) The big guy's woman getting upset with a worker behind the counter (apparently upset with the guy on the phone. While the worker is talking to the woman, she spits in his face.

2.) The worker comes from behind the counter to "deal with" the woman and promptly retreats when he sees the woman's man come into the store.

3.) The woman approaches the guy on the phone (who is doing his best to ignore her) and jabs him in the face with her finger 4 times.

4.) After the 4th jab, the guy confronts the woman and gets back in her face, just in time for the big guy to move her aside and take matters into his own hands.

You can see most of the rest in what the news clip shows, but by my count, the big guy punched him 7 times. The phone guy was out-of-it for sure after the second shot. He's clearly staggering in a daze for the last 5 shots.

5.) The big guy also drags the phone guy around the floor and ends up leaving with phone guy's cell phone. I guess he had to go call his fight promoter!

If anyone cares to see the whole thing, I'll e-mail you the video I have. PM me.

1: Higgens: FU(K OFF A$SHOLE - and we can talk about this person to person at XXX or any other local gathering in the Pacific Northwest.

2: I'm 5'11 200lbs and not in too bad shape. I don't think I'd touch that maniac with a 10' pole. Call 911 for help? - you bet. Testify in court? absolutly. But unless there were time to oganize a resturaunt full of of complete strangers to stop the assault together, most people of average build and average skills in martal arts can't be expected to do much in this situation.

Jeff Higgins 02-24-2005 12:23 PM

Wow, Jamie, what did I say? Do you recognize sarcasm when you see it? I'm sorry I upset you; it was not my intent to upset anyone. It's just that every time we see a white guy pick on any one of any different race, it is labeled as a racially motivated hate crime. I'm not saying the black man in this video had these motivations; I was not there and I won't pretend to look into his heart and mind. I just find it somewhat unbalanced in the way these incedents are covered in the news, and the way in which society reacts to them. Again, you have my apologies for my rather insensitive sarcastic remarks. I do hope we meet at the XXX (I won't be there next month; I'll be in Portland for an Alfa club track day, but I will be there in April) so we can discuss this like gentlemen. I'll even buy you a root beer.

masraum 02-24-2005 12:29 PM

One or two of those guys looked like they were pretty big to, but jumping in on a 6'4" 300# guy would be scary unless you were very confident that there were several other people who had your back. Wouldn't help if two ambulances needed to come. A chair would not have stopped that guy unless it was a really big heavy chair and you caught that guy just right. Someone should have called.

I'm kinda hoping the big guy is somebody's ***** in prison, but I wouldn't bet on it.
