Driving Audi's Holy Grail
I always though this was one of the coolest street cars ever. I drove a regular Quattro coupe back then and it was a blast. So this homologation special must be something else.

Sweet! I have always thought that a old Quattro coupe would make a great winter beater, play rally driver in the snow.

There's a company in the UK that does 'Sport' conversions on regular Quattros for around $8,000 (as I recall). The full race version:

I found the link: Dialynx. That would make an awesome street car.

Funny story. A few years ago I thought it would be fun to own one of these short wheelbase Sport Quattros. So, not knowing alot about Audis I started looking for one to buy as a daily driver, winter beater. Then, I came to realize that they are extremely rare collector cars with pricetags about the same as a real '73 Carrera RS and I changed my mind and gained a newfound knowledge and interest in these ultra rare competition cars.

I looked into the Dialynx a year or 2 ago and I'm pretty sure one could buy a Quattro Coupe and have it completely gone thru and converted to Sport specs for under $30,000. OK, it would be a clone, but they say the Dialynx is better than the real thing in many respects and ya don't have to worry about the occasional ding or stone chip. Maybe the ultimate winter fun car.

A Sport-converted Quattro would be pretty darn cool. Not just for winter - that would be a unique and fun car year-round.
I've never seen a US-spec original (ur) Quattro coupe for sale, though - how much do they fetch? Hmm, I wonder if you'd have problems exporting a US-spec Quattro Coupe to the UK and importing then registering it in converted form. Of course, here in CA we'd have additional registration and smog issues.

On my way down to the airport, I passed a guy in a Mid 90's S8. had it lowered a bit and some fat rubber. Driving very conservatively, BTW.
I gave him a thumb's up and he got a big a$$ grin on his face. Must be a car guy connection?

THe original Quattro Coupes are tough to find. They were sold in the US in the early 80's. A friend had one brand new (he sold it many years ago and I saw it maybe 5 years ago sitting for months behind a local office supply store). It seems like when I was looking at this conversion 1-2 years ago, they could be found for $10,000 - $15,000 for a nice one. I figured another $15-20K to go thru it and convert it.
Good point on the export/import issue. Wonder if there'd be a problem there? Maybe better off finding somebody with an already completed Dialynx Quattro they want to sell. |

The U.S. version Audi turbo Quattro coupe, sold in '83-'84, had a sticker of about $38k at the time. That made it a touch more $$ than the new 911 coupe sitting next to it on the showroom floor, so you can imagine that it had very small and hyper-enthusiast audience. It was a very cool car, but not to be confused w/ the European version that had ~300hp or the Sport Quattro competition version.
Not quite sure how one would have a regular car converted into a SWB SQ? Cut it in half and remove a foot or so? ![]()

There are step by step photos on the Dialynx website. Looks like a simple procedure .....

The site says they take 320mm from the wheelbase. That's not even an inch and a half. Is that right - seems like more.
I wish they kept a rear seat, even a small one, for the kids. How are we supposed to get our spouses to approve a two-seater? What am I, dreaming?

urquattros came in three different series, with engine power ranging from 200 originally to 220hp with the RR (20v) series engine..it was the sport that had the 300hp.
Audi then replaced it with the S2 in coupe, Avant and sedan form...same drive train as the urq...as well as creating the first S4 and the RS2... |

On thing that's interesting about the Dialynx conversions is that they retain the UrQ doors, roof and windshield. The rear SportQ had the more upright doors, roof and windshield from the Audi 80 (4000 here). Frankly I like the more laid back look, but it's not original.

Do you guys remember sometime in the mid 80's a bunch of Audi owners being run over by there own cars. There were multiple lawsuits alledging that the car was in park and slipped into gear and ran them over in there drive way.
I was only 12 at the time but remember seeing it on 60 minutes. Anyone recall this or was I high on cough medicine? |

Yeah, but it's pretty hard to tell someone who just maimed a family member that they can't tell the gas from the brake. In reaction, Audi started putting the brake pedal far away from the gas in deference to idiot Americans. Makes heel and toe more difficult, but if it saves even one life...
