Lightbulb Attn Sparky: Need subpanel tips

I'm putting a 60amp sub in my garage and I've run the conduit and I'm about ready to pull 4 #6 leads. 2 hot, 1 neutral, 1 grounded to main.

Do I need to install a separate ground rod at the sub location or is gounding to the main enough?

All leads are insulated. Should the ground be bare?

There will be a hot water tank in the garage. Is there any reason why I cannot put the sub box near the H2O tank? - like within a foot or two.

Any other suggestions on box location? Or things I should look out for?

Thanks.

How far is the sub from the main? You shouldnt need a seperate grounding rod. Then again check your local codes also

When I built my garage, I had to run a ground wire X (I think 15) feet through the foundation, IIRC this is called "Ufer" (sp?) ground. You will also need a grounding bar in the sub panel. If the "ufer" ground isn't possible (ie existing structure) then I think you'd need to drive a rod. An electrician gave me an explanation of why this was necessary, and it sounded good, but I can't recall it with enough detail to repeat it.

In this picture, the larger of the two grounds goes into the foundation, the other goes to the main panel.
