The Pope was a good man. May he rest in peace.

While I am not a Roman Catholic, I am a Christian. Pope John Paul II was indeed a great man. I have a lot of respect for someone who has done so much to help all mankind. Many leaders from other religious groups have expressed this as well.

I have moved the other thread about the Pope to be reviewed by the other moderators. Some have found it offensive and rude. I agree: it was getting out of hand. The leader of the Roman Catholic church has just passed - please show a little respect.

I do not wish to come across as someone who is 'shutting down' the liberals here. I am just asking for some respect in this time.
Please do not post offensive remarks here. If you must slam the Roman Catholic church, be respectful and wait some time - then feel free to post your comments. But respect those now who are saddened by the Pope's passing.

For those who are saddened, may I offer this: Pope John Paul II is now in a better place.

I do not agree with everything the RC Church practices, but now is not the time to be discussing such things, especially in a disrespectful attitude.

Regards,
-Zoltan.

Z..

It isn't the "liberals" alone, although some may pose as liberals. It is all those who lack the tolerance to entertain views other than their own that is the problem.

Randy:

Thanks. It is interesting. I have been on this world so long that I have arrived at the point where I can no longer be absolutely certain of anything and wonder how anyone can.

yeah, let's not start the blame game along conservative/liberal lines. Some of the most flaming liberals (e.g. Supe) are also Pope supporters. This is about other things...

Z-man,

With all due respect to both you and the pope, I'm hoping that the upper-case "H" in your thread title was a typographical error.

Hmm, I don't remember a similar administrative intervention when arafat died and people decided to discuss his faults as well as accomplishments. I think the same could be said of the thread about reagan passing on too.

Am I to assume that bringing up the previous pope's involvement in the pedophile scandal is part of the reason why the other thread is currently circling the memory hole?

The same argument could apply to the RC church leadership.....

Z, what Woodpie said. BTW, I'm also a Christian (not RC). I'll hold my other thoughts until the original thread re-appears.

May he rest in peace. He truly stood out among current world leaders as an example of kindness, compassion, and humility. His successor will have some big shoes to fill. This world would be a better place with more men like him.

Thanks, Z. Most appropriate. I was away from the site all weekend, and if some folks still do not understand that the Pope (and Jesus for that matter) DID NOT HOLD SECULAR OR POLITICAL POSITIONS and therefore should not be expected to solve secular or political problems, the I'll will be happy to resume engaging them in that discussion later. Probably after this week is over, would be decent timing (his funeral will be Friday, I guess). And just a quick warning for some: Bashing this particular Pope is just going to make you look like an idiot. Go ahead, if you like, but folks will regard you as an idiot. Some will do this, I suspect. It will be like accusing Porsche of making a completely unsuitable, unreliable, slow car when it designed the 911. Same with negative comments about the Pope. Show us your ignorance if you must. Just wait until after Friday.

And no, it's not the libs, generally who are going to be the problem. I'm not an isolated example. There are folks out there who just enjoy slinging mud at any authority that attempts to control their behavior. Gubmint. RC Church. Whatever. They've noticed how embarrassingly easy it is to criticize. I'm tired of them, but their heckling presents opportunities to have important discussions, so I will continue to rise to the bait they drop. Any seasoned philosophy student should know that critique is shamefully easy. Defense is the challenge. Because you need to understand so much more in order to explain/defend. Bob, in the fourth post above, shows his wisdom in this regard.

At any rate, Pope John Paul II is widely recognized as probably the most consistent and effective world leader in recent memory. The world is in greater danger now because of his absence. Let's pray for Divine inspiration upon the College of Cardinals, as they select a successor.

I'm not a Roman Catholic (or a Christian, for that matter), but from what I have gleaned, the Pope was a very passionate man who genuinely had a desire to help people. I have to respect him for that.

- RIP -

I have never cried when someone has passed away, I always concidered it a "blessing" for that person since they would suffer no longer, however, this morning CNN caught me off guard and tears started to fall as I watched Pope John Paul II body be carried to the Bacilica. I feel like an orphan today

That's putting a hell of a lot of stock in a man who was a figurehead. "The world is in greater danger now because of his absence." He never truly halted war and has not stopped catastrophes such as terrorist bombings, the spread of diseases that have killed millions and other travesties.

There are folks out there who just enjoy slinging mud at any authority that attempts to control their behavior. Gubmint. RC Church. Whatever. They've noticed how embarrassingly easy it is to criticize. Embarrassingly easy? What does that mean? It's easy because it's easy. I thought 350 went too far in his criticism only because I believe JP2 only has so much authority. But in retrospect, yes, pedophile priests were transferred under his reign, though I have yet to see - or anyone else for that matter - that it was done with the Pope's blessing. Have some respect for the victims of these priests.

Bashing this particular Pope is just going to make you look like an idiot. Go ahead, if you like, but folks will regard you as an idiot.
So religious vitriol takes over for dissenting thought? One who does so for the next 3 to 5 days is of subpar intelligence and/or ability to be sympathetic. What crap! BTW: using the word "idiot" in this case, is very close minded, and reflective, I must say.

Personally, I think moving, hiding, sequestering, or whatever else was done with that thread was done out of poor judgment. Though some of the viewpoints were hard and in some cases unjustified, I believe "followers" of the pope who believe in his greatness, should have thicker skin and more reasonable arguments than "you'll go to hell" or you're being disrespectful. Calling people "idiots" who do not agree with the pope or his viewpoints, and moving threads where opposing viewpoints have been voiced, is not a good way to approach the subject, either.

dd74 - I see your point, I just think that the timing is the issue, I will give my life to protect freedom of speach, but seriously, if for once in our lifetime we can just hold back any negative arguements. Now is the time.

If your a non beleiver, do it out of respect for those of us that do beleive.

Chill out dd, a religous leader of 1 billion people just died. Trashing him in a public forum shows a complete lack of class. To me, it is like going to a funeral of a neighbor and spitting on the casket. Does this make one an idiot? I do not know, but the word MORON comes to mind.

I don't believe this was the problem at all.

The problem was the comments made about (too many) a very important man, on the day of his death - while a great many people are mourning. It has to do with respect for individuals. There's a time and a place for everything. Now is not the time for the vile hate and name calling that was going on.

I'm surprised that some people were not able to control their hatred any better. Disagreeing with the Pope, Catholicism, Christianity, church polices, etc. is one thing. But what was being done in that other thread is quite another.

Society does not allow anything, anytime, anywhere. There are some generally accepted rules which allow us to function. We are not all 2 year olds.

Why is this so hard to understand?

- Skip

Fine, then the recent thread about Johnny Cochran and past thread re: Arafat should be removed for further review. If we extend a moratorium on negative comments, then it should be extended to every human being.
