Yep, there's plenty of scams out there. Candidly, I'm not very likely to toss money at a panhandler.

dd's story is a little frightening. I am concerned about the drying up of money for mental illness treatment. Taht can mean a great many things, but essentially there are more sick people on the streets today than even a year ago. To some degree we pay a price for having those individuals in our society. It's just a matter of what we pay for and how we pay. The unbalanced lady in dd's neighborhood was costing dd and his family some time, some peace of mind, etc. If the cops had to come take her away, that's additional cost. Her bahavior is probably controllable, at less cost than if we just shove her out on the street to be on her own. We are far more willing to make deliberate attempts and handling the problem, when the problem involves young people. It's an investment. And that's smart of us. It'd be more expensive if we tried to ignore it.

Fact is, as Mother Theresa told us, there is just not enough love in the world. Hate doesn't seem to fix things. We act as though we can hate things into good condition. But we know that won't work.

Yeah, my daughter will come to better understand the scams out there, but I'm frankly not sure she doesn't pretty much get it right now. At 20, we were all more informed and wise than old people thought we were. I think she knows what you guys are reporting. And that makes only a small difference to her. She's not ready to turn her back on the weak and hurting in our society. And that's the part I hope she keeps forever. I think she will.

Garage
[to man in restaurant]
Jake: [fakes accent] How much for the little girl? How much for the women?
Man: What?
Jake: Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters... sell them to me. Sell me your children.
