Resturaunts along the I-10 interstate?

Does anyone have any recommendations for good places to eat along I-10 between Phoenix and I-75 in Florida? I'm looking for local flavor like BBQ in the south or Cajun in Louisiana. What ever the area is known for. If it is near the highway that would be a bonus as we will be doing a lot of driving.

Like here in Phoenix, if you are looking for Mexican food go to Los Dos Molinos. Best mexican food I've ever had and one of the best places to eat I have ever been to.

Just FYI, Los Dos is considered "New Mexico" Mexican food... IIRC.

They make kick-ass margaritas.

jeff, in fabens texas. cattleman's land and cattle company. I-10 to faben exit. (20 miles on the other side of el paso from you). you take the exit, and head north for about 8 miles. then just when you think you are lost and cursing my name, you will find a working ranch that has a fantastic restaurant. the margaritas are excellent, especially when you chase it with the best steak. not that expensive. they have a zoo, that you can walk around, with local wildlife. free. try to time a sunset. hmmm, ranch food. beans, steak, coleslaw....damn, i am hungry now.

Vash is on! You can also take US290 from I-10 to Harper Texas. In the middle of town is a little hole in the wall that has good local food, if the same older lady is still running it. I haven't been there in about 18 months. Continue through Fredricksburgh for an interesting tourist town with good food and local vintage wines that are very good. Stay on 290 through Austin for some real good cattle country until the 610 loop in Houston. There is a good place in Brenham, but I can't remember where it is. Oh, get some Blue Bell Ice Cream while there. Take 610 north (unless you want to do lots of traffic and shop in the Galleria) around town to I-10 on the other side.

David, Does 290 thru Austin travel quickly? I'm thinking about by-passing San Antonio and taking 290 to Houston. Will I be adding a lot of time to my trip (I will have the wife and kids with me)?

You will be taking away about an hours drive time using 290. This is four lane, divided most of the way. Don't hit Austin in the early morning or 3 to 6 PM or you will be stuck in never ending traffic. There are lights in Austin and some west and I think two east of Austin, but it is smooth sailing after that. I hope the guys from Austin chime in to help out. Oh, at Convict Hill on the North side of the road is a pretty good Tex/Mex restaurant. Oh, and if camping out I'd suggest Perdanales Falls State Park just north of 290. It is a great park.

Untill you get to east Texas you have your choice of barbeque (cow, no pig) or mexican food. If you don't like that, there's barbeque & mexican food. Once you get to Houston you can get Louisiana style food. Highly recommended is Pat's seafood in Henderson La. After Lafayette take the last exit before the Atchafalaya swamp, go right, take the first left & drive to the end of the road. I think the dish is crawfish 3 ways, bisque, etouffee & pie. You won't want to leave. Friendly cajuns, cold beer & killer food. After that things stay good all the way along into Florida. Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Miss. gulf coast are loaded with great places.

Austin info, split off of 290 at RR1826, make a left turn at the first blinking yellow on 1826, proceed east on Slaughter Creek to IH35, travel south on IH35 (pm me if you want Texas award winning smoked Chicken from my back yard, with what ever on the side) to FM1327, turn left then right on US 183 to Lockhart, BBQ heaven. http://www.lockhart-tx.org/BBQ.htm

After that, visit tabby dolls favorite place in Gonzales if you wish.

At all expenses, I would never travel 290 from west Austin towards the east. The most direct line would be 290 (it hits TX HWY 71) remain on 71 to TX HYW 21, left then to Bastrop, then right at 290.

In San Antonio, I like Texas Pride BBQ...about 3-4 miles south of I-10 on 1604 as you are leaving (east side). Looks like an old gas station.

ok lots of bbq here, just thought of another. if you happen to be going through el paso, from 9 am to 1 pm. I-10 thru the center of town. keep and eye out for the COPIA exit. once you get off, you head south. you immediately get into a "neighborhood of color" two blocks down, there is a spotlessly clean tortilla factory called LA COLONIA. it will be on your left side. park in front, go inside and take a deep breath of fresh tortillas. they will be coming off of a conveyor belt. hot out of the oven and into bags. but they have a burrito stand set up. you cannot make a wrong decision. but i recommend the picadillo burrito with the queso option. they will pull a fresh tortilla and make you the best damn $1 dollar burrito you will ever stuff into your face. and all this, you will be off the freeway, and back onto the freeway in about 7 minutes. unless they are busy (@10:00) when the neighborhood mechanics and factory workers take a break. my god, they are good.
