Wait, I'm confussed .. . someone left a 914 in the barn because of spiders?

dd74 05-29-2005 07:33 PM

There's a car store in Malibu that sources Beck replica 550 Spyders (if that's the Spyder you're talking about). FWIW, I've seen the Spyders for sale there for the low $30 K. Of course that is for a replica, but in any event, it's certainly a helluva deal.

Like I said - I will be in CT in June and will pay a visit to this mystery - don't worry CT dude, I will keep it on the down low!

You have to admit, 350, this was a funny-assed line from our young barn-door Indiana Jones.

350HP930 05-30-2005 04:30 AM

I was mildly amused but it goes to show that this guy's BS detector is all out of whack.

Its a shame we will have to wait till some woman moves a giant pile of boxes to see if this story is legit.

notfarnow 05-30-2005 06:14 AM

As a rule of thumb, I leave old ladies' boxes alone.

hay if that ol ladies box leads to a legit spyder - na, it still ain't worth it...

dd74 05-30-2005 08:24 PM

What? You guys aren't into hijinks with mature women inside their barns? Or, is it you're just not into their "barns?" Cobwebs and all...

targa911S 05-31-2005 11:47 AM

All I ever find in barns is crap..... I would love to find an old biplane just sitting waiting for my loving touch. Stearman please. Well ok I'd take a Ryan ST too. Hell I'd like to find just the radial engine from one.

targa911S 05-31-2005 11:52 AM

If I could find this for $1,000.00.....die a happy man http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1117569107.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1117569122.jpg

350HP930 05-31-2005 02:58 PM

Hey Targa, if you ever get involved in any aircraft resto projects drop me a line. I would be happy to lend a hand.

targa911S 05-31-2005 03:16 PM

it's a fantasy for me. I love old 30's 40's air racers. but if I found one cheap...now that's different! Are you a pilot 350?

350HP930 05-31-2005 03:41 PM

Almost, my dad was a private pilot so between flying with him and tinkering around in college I probably have between 10 and 20 hours of time at the yoke not to mention dozens of takeoff and landings. I never quite got around to going through all the trouble of getting my licence though.

Between my college lab courses and time spent working on fabric, metal and composite aircraft structures I would almost prefer working on them to flying them.

I concidered recently getting my A&P certification until I found out the FAA wouldn't count any of my training or experience since its not all documented work on registered aircraft and the university of florida does not have a FAA training certificate.

M.D. Holloway 05-31-2005 04:41 PM

dporsche74 - did you actually fly that thing? Looks like a pretty bad way to die!

dporsche74 05-31-2005 04:50 PM

never had the balls to take it into the air, it was a wild enough ride on the ground ,
the inventor Benson had a assistant Ken brock with was the only parts guy for these, He got his head cut off 2 yrs ago landing it , i sold it after that

M.D. Holloway 05-31-2005 04:58 PM

like I said...

I think I will take my chances on the ground. I fly every other week and I absolutely hate hate hate it. I can't stand flying.

Was or are any of the people you were working with a A&P? I was a licensed FAA examiner for a long time. Was with the military overseas and helped the helo and fixed wing military guys get their A&P rating. Sure helps in the job market.

Its well worth having and anyone you worked with who does have a A&P can sign you off for the experience needed to take the writtens. Takes 18 months "hands on" experience for the airframe or engine exam. The practical is on your shoulders.

Here is my 1947 fabric covered Aeronca on the left. On the right is a 1948 Aeronca Sedan, one of only 1000 or so ever made and one of about 400 left flying around the world.

No starter, have to hand prop it, no radio, carry a handheld and its just plain flying and a lot of fun!
