Where to sell wine on the internet?
I have a friend who would like to sell relatively expensive wines by the case and perhaps some by the bottle. An example would be a case of six early nineties Opus One. He also has a NJ liquor license.
Where can one auction or sell on the Net? Ebay will allow a small number of pre-approved seller run live auctions but this seems like a hassle if at all possible. Any ideas?

Early '90s Opus One? Post on a 996TT forum and they'll go quickly.
![]() Seriously, he's not that far from New York. I've bought wine at Christie's and Butterfield & Butterfield (now defunct, I think). That's where you'll find the most serious bidders around. |

Jon, I think a case of this stuff is only around $1k. Is that worthy of these auction houses? The internet would be much more convenient.

People (esp rich people) can get into a bit of a frenzy about wine. If it was bought when released and put immediately into temp and humidity controlled storage where it's been ever since, you'll get a lot of interest. If it was sitting in a storeroom in the back of a retail store for 10 years, that's not so good.
An auction that has lots of collector-buyers can get you a very good price. But for a small quantity, save the hassle, figure out what's it's worth and sell it informally--like here. |

Good points. What he's selling was/is intended as an investment and stored in a professionally outfitted wine cellar. Location being under a relatively high end restaurant here in NNJ.
I need to get a list of what he's offering this go-round.

Rick,
Check out winebid.com for starters. There are others, YAHOO it and you will likely find some good links. Opus is overrated ![]() -Chris

Rick,
I don't have personal experience, only lots of looking and salivating ![]() My old Controller used to use it a lot though, he seemed to like it. When I worked in Napa, it was always funny to see the employees unloading their allocations (and some wine that just mysteriously vansihed from the winery) on that site. some good deals to be had......... -Chris
