Anyone Have Their Own Domain Name?
Has anyone gone and gotten their own domain name for personal use?
In other words, instead of being "johndoe@earthlink.net" you are "john@doe.net" or whatever you like? I have had the same email address with Earthlink since 1995 or thereabouts, and now I'm thinking of changing away from Earthlink since there are such cheap DSL deals out there. But I don't want my email address to be always changing as I change internet service providers. So I am thinking about registering my own domain name. Any experience with this? Pros, cons, unexpecteds? Like a particular domain registration company?

Hi John,
There are lots of possibilities, and lots of different companies that offer the services that you described. The annual fee for owning a domain name (if it is not taken already) is $10-$20 if I remember correctly. try www.enom.com to see if the domain names that you were thinking about are taken (this is just one of the many companies that offer the service). if you get a domain name, then you can specity email addresses, and their servers can forward those emails to any of your existing email accounts for free...

If you just want a universal email address why not simply create either a hotmail, yahoo or google email address? This way you can change ISP's whenever you want. The best thing is that it's free!
If you really want your own domain name I would recomend avahost . They are great to work with and they're very inexpensive. My site has never been down. I believe their service starts at $7/month and domain registration is free when you register it through them. So you get your own home on the web, 100 email accounts and a bunch of other stuff. Check them out. (www.avahost.com) |

I've got mine KevinP73 dot com It was simple once you get your desired name registered, finding a host is pretty simple and cheap.
I don't use the mail feature very much as I've my hotmail account forever.

Nothing wrong with having a domain, it's fun and easy.
I use goDaddy.com and have 6 or 7 sites running with them now. You can set up all kinds of email addresses, and run separate websites off the same domain..... jump in and learn. Just find someone who knows how to do what you'd like to do, and learn from them. It's really easy if you have a guide. I build sites for my friends, keep one for my personal and one for my biz, such as: www.robmckibbon.com www.rolyn.biz sites I've built: (for friends) www.racewerks.ca www.porscheconnections.com www.heavenscentfoods.com www.shuswapbjj.com www.newlifeoutreach.info www.goEasy.biz Not all the sites are completed, waiting for info or such, but its fun and really simple once you take the plunge! I only started last winter; went from basic photoshop 2.0 to website publishing with Html. I also stick pages up on the backside of domains like this too, comes in handy for posting pics with a link or advertising such as this one: www.rolyn.biz/SAForSale.html Go for it! The cost is negligible. Cheers! |

I've looked into this some more. It seems like a good thing to do.
Right now I pay $50/mo for DSL service and email accounts (we use 2 with 100MB each, could have up to 5) from Earthlink. I can get DSL from SBC for $15/mo. I can buy a domain name for the next 5 years from Register.com for $60 or $1/mo, and 50MB email accounts for $30/yr or $5/mo. So instead of $50/mo to Earthlink I could pay $26/mo to SBC and Registrar.com - and I'll never have to change my email address again. Interesting . . .

I've got 15+ domains and used to have a lot more. It's a pretty simple process. I've used Network Solutions for many years -- they are reliable and you're not dealing with a middleman as they are the prime registrar for most of the TLD's. I run my own servers so have not used outside services for DNS, email, web hosting etc. much at all.

gruv.org
Used dyndns.org to register it since I used their free service for years. No issues. Always points to my (constantly changing) home IP address on my dsl line. Alltel doesn't block any ports, so I can run web, email, ssh, etc. off it no problem.
