Quality ceiling fans
It used to be that you just paid the premium for the Hunter label and got what you paid for...so goes "world economy".
I need to replace a couple of fans in the house (sounds like bad bearings), and thought I'd poll the group for thoughts on brands and quality. As far as I can tell they are all made overseas now and I really don't want to replace the crap that's in the house now with similar crap. Haven't really looked past the mega-home-improvement-marts, and still leaning toward the Hunter brand because of past experience; but who knows, maybe Home Depot bought them out and it's just a label now. Thoughts? |

I just got installed a "Hampton Bay" ceiling fan in my shop a couple weeks ago. I bought one of the 'high end' ones from HD, $190. It's fairly nice, but I know there's nicer ones out there. It's pretty quiet, doesn't wobble, and it actually has an efficient blade design, not just the standard flat paddles. It's nicer than any of the ceiling fans I have installed in my house!

My Hampton Bay fans have all broken (bad motors/bearings after a few years). They are a Home Depot brand, so don't expect much in the way of their warranty (you need to have all paperwork, and ship the fan back to some office for they to look at it).
My Hunter fans have all been flawless. Casablanca fans are also pretty nice.

My house is 20 yrs. old and I installed 4 hunter fans and at the same time I installed 2 hunter fans in my office.
The 2 fans in the office never are turned off and they are still quite, 2 fans in the house are never turned off and one makes a clicking noise at medium speed, the other 2 are fine. I think I got my money's worth from hunter and yes, I would buy them again. I also have a casablanca fan in my shop and it is total crap, noisy but in the shop were I make noise, it doesn't bother me. The other day I was cleaning the fan due to dust and I broke one of the blades off, cheap plastic....will replace with a hunter.

In an apartment I use to rent, I installed a Hampton Bay in one room and a Hunter in another room. Thankfully, the Hunter was in the room that I slept in. After a year the H-B sounded like it was ready for the trash, while the Hunter was nice and quiet.
I took the Hunter with me when I moved out.

Go with Hunter - we have some and they run silent and never went out of balence. My wife oicked up a Hampton Bay and two Panasonic (didn't even know they made fans!) and these fr^ck'n things are noisy. The lights seem to end up vibrating and needed tightening ever week. real pain in the arse at night when thats all you hear - worse then a dripping facet.
Go with Hunter or suffer! (Hay , thats not a bad tag line, I should pitch that to them!)

I think Hunter fans are fine, but I do think the have farmed out the name, since you can buy them anywhere (Home Depot, Sam's, Lowes). I have never had any issues with them. I installed a huge Casablanca fan in our main living area, more for the look and finish. It was very expensive $6-700?, but is is a large room and it never make any audible noise, even a high.

I put two Hampton Bays in our house about 7 years ago. They have stayed on for probably 90% of that time and they are whisper quite to this day.
Looks like we might have lucked out.

We skipped the AC upgrade and went with ceiling fans. We have 4 Hampton bay, 3 Hunter, and one Casablanca. One of the Hunter fan's (of course the one above our bed) started making a metal dragging sound at any speed other than high. I should have returned it to HD a year ago but keep putting it off...

We just installed a Hunter "Mission Bay" 60" fan in our new bedroom a few months ago and it's great! Very quiet and moves the air, but doesn't create a "tornado"!
