Are Boxsters and Caymans "Hairdresser's Cars"?

Are Boxsters and Caymans "Hairdresser's Cars"?

Are they suffering the same "Hairdresser", "Chick Car" Syndrome as Z3's and Benz SLK Compressors?

case in point:

http://www.forbes.com/home/vehicles/2005/06/29/mercedes-porsche-convertibles-cx_dl_0629show_ls.html

hehehe

ps: I'm just stirring up trouble ;-)

Yes, you are stirring up needless trouble. I can't see this staying in the 911 Tech forum very long and it won't unless someone starts comparing the one platform against the tittle marque of this forum (see, I didn't say it).

For my money, the bigger "sports" car (I didn't say it again) is becoming the softer car. The Cayman just may well kick everything else's ass. It has the potential. Bring all the hairdressers to the track. Bring 'em in their Boxsters too. I've seen enough of the Boxster on the track too know it is a good car in the right hands.

I have not heard that phrase for decades. Supercilious Londoners applied it to E-types in the 60s & 70s.
My casual observation is that the Boxster fits, but I think the Cayman price will deter all but the most successful hairdresser.
Now what was that mid-70s movie with Julie Christie and whatshisname, hairdresser who rode a motorcycle?

My bosses in the video-game industry are both Englishman.....They are way into cars, and one day they turned me on to that phrase: "Hairdresser's Car"...I thought it was funny.........

You know the trendy Beauty-Shop owner that drives a Boxs....errr u get the idea ;-)

I think the Boxster is a car for those that are interested in making a statement. There is definitely a vanity factor. But its a good sports car.

Those are all true statements of the 911, and any other Porsche.

You know I must say though.......

While I dropped my ole LongHood 911 of at TRE's.....they took me for a ride in a 993 AND a souped up '69 (Tyson's ride)......And driving in the 993 was sooooo "cushy".......No attitude.......

Like a quick luxury car......(which is by all means needed in the market)

I'm hoping the Cayman....will be more of a Driver's car......less sound insulation (bring on the noise), feel the road more.......

but I'm not holding my breath.

Yes they are. As is any 911 other than mine, which is rugged and masculine (it's really, really uncomfortable--really). The notion that a vehicle is a collection of engineered parts made of various metals and other materials, designed to perform in a specific manner verifiable by testing on race and street venues is patently absurd. I certainly hope that puts this question to rest now that there is a definitive answer.

Unless your hairdresser works at Vidal Sasson or Mario Tuccoci or what ever foo foo salon you go to my hair dresser (AKA Barber) only charge me $8.00 for a cut and shampoo with a $2.00 tip that 10 bucks he make in a half an hour or $20.00 an hours multiply that by 2080 hours in a 52 weeks, 40 hours work week, he's only making 41,600.00 a year. Not enough to qualify for a Cayenne, maybe a used Boxster.

With all those nice rides in Southern Cal, who would go and rent a KIA?

Barbers drive old Caddys and charge $10 for a haircut.
Hairdressers drive Boxsters and charge $150 for a perm.

Well I may not be a hairdresser but I have queried PCNA about
deleting some items on a new Cayman – soundproofing, A/C,
and the like.

I want to park this beauty on the shelf.

I rode right seat in a Boxster at Streets of Willow. If I had the cash, I'd be on one in a heartbeat to run at the track. There is also talk of a Boxster spec series in POC. I imagine it might happen in a year or two as the old ones are starting to get pretty cheap. Roll bar, strip it, add some cooling. Awesome track machine.

I don't love the styling ( ha ha) but I too have been on track with a few really well driven "S" models and they are formidable cars. I would love one for track use with the correct mods....

I think with a 996 engine in one, a boxter would be fine. I personally don't like the new enterior thou

Rememeber, to date the Boxster has been 'held back' by Porsche so as not to erode sales from the 911 - they have always stated that the Boxster will never be faster than a 911 (hence no CS or turbo versions). the Boxster has always been a 'technically' superior car in terms of ultimate design (mid-engined) for racing and has been widely acknowledged as one of, if not the best handling cars available.

What we are seeing now is a change in this view (gradually) by Porsche where the 911 is transitioning into more of a GT and the Boxster/Cayman is arising as the more pure sports car. I will be very keen to see if a Club Sport or turbo version of the Cayman appears in the near future.

Don't get me wrong, I think its very sad that Porsche is moving the 911 in that direction, but I think that the Cayman is a very promising substitute. Lets hope they get it on the track as competition car soon.

Seeing as the demographic & median age of buyer for the 997 is 50 years old...Its obvious that the "new 911" is for fat, balding, aging middle aged white guys. So that is where today's "true sports car" is at?
