Antifreeze is a solution (ethylene glycol and water). Salt doesn't work because it destroys the metal, but some early manufacturers (early 1900's) used sugar water in the cooling system. A trick I heard about used during WWII-- they would put their beers in a 55 gallon drum full of aviation gasoline, and put an air line at the bottom. The bubbles from the line caused the gas to evaporate, cooling the beers.
