To be honest I did not know that there is a Porsche wave. I’ve been driving my 81SC daily for almost a year and have never seen a wave to date. I strongly believe that it is because I live in Los Angeles. Coming form the Jeep world it is something I felt was missing when I drive my SC.


I’d love to see more Pelicans on the road.

Seems like the newest models are the ones driven by "the pricks who have more money than sense". Once they become older/more affordable/deeper aftermarket parts supply, they are then cool for the rest of us.
I have owned a 924, 928, 914, and an SC, in that order, and just loved all of them for what they were. Not for a status symbol, as none of them were particularly new/perfect, but hey, if I can drive a car that cost $30k in '79 for $4k, it makes me feel special, too.
They are all cool, but I have thought every one of those models were for jerks at different points in my life.
And to think I used to absolutely covet a 944 in perfect primer (!) with huge rear tires at one point....ugh.

Last week I drove my SC to work and a brand new 911 Turbo passed me going the other way and gave me a nice wave, which I returned. I wave to every Porsche I see. Not that it happens every day. When I say wave I mean, more like raising my hand. Not a side to side wave. Either way it was nice to see that not all newer owners are snobs.
the comments porschefool made are simular to what I have heard from the Corvette crowd. There seems to be at least 2 "camps" the 1982 and older, then 83 and newer. That's the time frame when the price on those jumped something like $10,000.

I actually got an enthusiastic wave from a guy driving a Carrera GT.

I was actually shocked. I was on the freeway and I saw him coming up in my mirror. He slowed down in the lane next to me gave me a wave and throttled out of sight.

Just for what it's worth, I drove my baby to work on Friday right down Huntington Drive through San Marino ($$$ area for those outside SoCal), which becomes Mission and then Soto all the way into L.A. The "boys with money" were out in force taking their cars to work on Friday - new 997 Carrera 4S, several Boxsters including a couple with aftermarket "touches" that lead me to believe they are enthusiasts, not just commuters. A NICE black M Coupe, a couple of SC's, others....not a SINGLE wave. Not a look, nod, nothing. C'mon you car enthusiasts. This used to be a sort of loose, tease-your-buddy-about his-car fraternity. We all liked different cars, different styles, but we all APPRECIATED the effort and expense it takes to keep nice cars nice and on the road ---- what the heck happened?

I'll have to show this post to my wife (who is a female hetero) who bought her 944 new in 84 w/ Euro delivery. She would LOVE to talk to you about the stereotype. She has "graduated" to an M3 at this point and still can eat a chauvinist for lunch (figuaratively). BTW we still have the car and except for fibro-myalgia hindering her ability to shift comfortably in traffic she would still commute in it every day or else in our 91 C4 Targa. And yes she would probably still come home and talk about the insecure little men that try to pass her with ridiculous moves in their Toyota or some such POS. Oh yeah, she did all the normal maintainance herself and still managed to raise a couple kids and keep me in line. My granddaughter will also be "quite pleased" with your assessment once she is old enough to understand the ridiculous content of comments like these.

So I pull up to a stop light this afternoon then notice out of the corner of my eye the familiar look of a Fuchs wheel to my left.
Look over and see a beautiful copperish brown Targa next to me.

I wave and get a genuine smile and nod in return.

Later that day, at another stop light, I pull up to a 997 and instinctively wave as the driver looks over. As he faced forward and seemed startled that a stranger waved at him and gave a slight head nod. Oh well.

I don't know - I'm genuinely amazed every time I drive my lovely 911 that it's mine, but I think that there are a lot of people that buy Porsches not for the reason that I did.
It was something that I'd always dreamed of as a teenager.

I'll wave at everyone (well, not so much Boxsters or Cayannes) and bow to those driving air cooled Porsches.

I seem too slow to flash the lights, but I've seen others do it from time to time.

My lady dentist owns a Boxster, my daughter's Ortho a Cayenne. Neither one know one damned thing about Porsche, except that it's a Porsche. It's all about the looks, the GPS, the stereo. The Ortho's Cayenne sports a Firestone sticker on the windscreen - to remind him when to get the oil improperly changed. Who in the King Fark takes a brand new Porsche to a farking Firestone for oil changes? And what the hell else are they doing for him there? Wtf?

They don't seem to give a hoot, if it dies, they'll buy another car that matches the plastic identity they are creating for themselves. It's a purse that matches their shoes, and that's all.

Contrast that with the elderly doctor two doors down from my dentist who drives a '75 911. Bought it new. He has it shipped to NH for vacation use, doesn't do the service himself but knows every friggin wire and bolt on the car. Knows his history, knows how to drive and enjoys driving it. And LOVES talking about it.

Then there is me, who came oh so close to getting a new 911 or a Cayenne once I finally had the resources to get into one, it was my dream, I thought. Thank goodness I thought again. Since I bought my 911 a month or so ago, I have lived in my garage with that car and my newly acquired 928 (how the hell do my wife and I wave to each other if we meet?). I haven't turned wrenches in over twenty years, but got through a timing belt/ water pump/gear job on the 928.

It's like anything else, like music - there are artists who are in it for the sake of the music and then there are posers who are more about the idea of being a musician - the ones who tease their hair and put on spandex before going out to breakfast.

I wave at them all - I wave at the badge, no way of telling who's behind the wheel and for what reasons. It could have been me in the 996 or the Cayenne.

FWIW, I get more looks and more comments and more people showing interest in the 928 than I do the 911. My neighbors didn't start wandering over until they saw the Shark's ass hanging out under the garage door. I'm not getting into the Air/Water thing, next year I am getting a 914 and/or a 944.

Were the 928 owners of yesteryear the Boxster/Cayenne owners of today?

Tongue-in-cheek responses or otherwise. Sounds like a mixture of the two. Ever wonder how that porcupine story started?

My solution: Wave or don't wave and continue to move in the opposite direction. Life's too short to worry about who to wave to and why. Here's a suggestion: Don't perform a wave with arm-extended and palm forward. Remember, you're doing this in a German car.
