LOS ANGELES -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.
Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said. Too bad. He was my favorite character. ![]()

My all-time favorite Star Trek scene was in Trouble with Tribbles. Scotty and company were standing tall in front of Captain Kirk, who was demanding to know who started a fist fight with the Klingons on the space station, and why. Kirk finally focuses his quetioning on Scotty who relates how the Klingons had insulted his Captain. "So that's when you hit him" Kirk says rhetorically. "No sir, we should all be big enough to take a few insults" is how Scotty answered. "So when DID you hit him?" demands Kirk. "Well Captain, they called the Enterprise a garbage scow..." Scotty was my favorite, too. Rest in peace, Scotty.

I will miss him as well.
We can all see him at his best, captured forever in those moments on film and tape. Larger than life. Applied to him when up on that screen.

Not to mention always there for fans at conventions, etc.
And a war hero - he was in Normandy on D-Day, lost a finger, got hit in the leg, and took a round in the chest that was stopped by a cig case.

I feel older every time one of the actors that entertained my teenager life die.
He was born in Vancouver, Canada, and studied in New-York after the war. Thats right, he was part of Juno Beach D-Day

Seems that he kept himself pretty well grounded in reality.

Anyone who's seen Trekkies has a real understanding for what kind of a great guy Jimmy Doohan was.
On and offscreen he was the best of the best. RIP

Very sad -- he always brought a smile no matter how many times you'd seen those classic old episodes.
Fathered a kid at 80 years old...what a stud...RIP

If I understood the radio reports accurately, some company in Texas is flying his ashes into space.

I haven't seen all the old TV shows, but my favorite scene of his was in the Star Trek movie about whales. On Earth, he goes into some sort of composites/plastics company to order material to make the whale holding tanks. He sits down in front of the computer, puts the mouse up to his lips, and says "Computer!" Good stuff.
