Anybody into old wooden boats? just bought a '56 Century

why? I don't know. It is pretty solid, all original sat up since '74, so hey it's a barn find right? It's got a grey marine 135 flathead 6 and it only shows 411 hrs. I am building a new house that will have a 2000 sq foot garage so I'll have plenty of room to work (in about 2yrs) and it's on the water so I will NEED one of these right?

Anyway, anyone care to chime in on where I can find info or what to look for. I have been a GRP boat guy for a while now but never owned a woodie.

Cheers!

COOL. Love them.

Seattle is wooden boats central. If you are ever up this way, there is a wooden boat builders guild of some kind on Lake Union, just north of down town.

I would love an old wood Chriscraft....but the work....yikes....

Friend of mine used to restore old Chriscraft boats... lots of work but well worth it!

Thumbs up

I love them and own a 1959 Lewis Craft. A PCA friend got me hooked when they invited me to a show the had entered their Chris-Craft in. Their boats have been in a few books and magazines too. Here are a few links to help you.

Good thing your in Florida or I would be tempted to stop by your house with my check book in hand!

Does that out board work? How hard is it keep a vintage outboard running? I live half a mile from a boat ramp so I see a bunch of that kind of stuff for sale but I always tell myself...

Yes, those things are so simple, like my 1950 Chevy. I even have the original owners manule for the Scott Atwater Bail-O-Matic

Nope, Scarano built in Albany, NY ~1999.

Yes, they are quick. I'll bet that we have the record for sailing the length of LI Sound in one of her sisters, 50 -70 knot wind at our backs, tide running w/ us, surfing most of the way, Great Fun!!

My father-in-law has a Kettenburg (sp) Pacific Class (PC) race sailboat from WWII era. This was a small fleet built out of San Diego and primarily West Coast based. Approx. 32', no frills, no motor, no electronics. Sleek, quick, pretty and a helluva lot of work to keep in the water. (Which it hasn't been for several years.)

My best friend's parents restored this 1947 '72 ft. wooden boat from the ground up over a 10 year period. (Byron, you can relate to this, as it sat in the St. Johns, just north of the Ortega River bridge for the latter part of the restoration.) Then 'our' tax dollars paid to truck it across the country to San Diego, and 'we' paid for it to sit in the America's Cup marina for several years (...a fine example of 'our' military spending, but that's another subject). I've sailed on it a few times out in the pacific...here's a pic of it in the San Diego harbor:

Speaking of military spending

We spotted this during a recent stop in Bermuda, 2 US ARMY tugs, 1 started from Seattle, via the canal to Va. to tow the other to England for mods.

The soldiers were a nice bunch.

Another neat old woodie
