Through out my life I have had much older friends than myself....I have sought out the wisdom that their experiences has given them.....I have listened to the stories of their lives...and I have remembered them...It also seems much easier for me to talk their language than that of younger men or even my own peer group....

Some might quip that I am seeking out a father figure...but that is an erroneous assumption..it really is out of a sense of a strong sense of father that brings me to befriend these men.

I essentially see the role of a father as being a guide/teacher to a child...the father having allready passed through the life experiences that his child is experiencing...a role model by example rather than being dictorial...and lest I forget he must acknowledge his childrens capacity to love...

It is however unfortunate that being men we have our limitations...and sometimes those limitations brings disapointment to our children...and that is where the role of God steps in to give our children hope that our limitations as men can be overcome....that love will prevail.

From time to time the last of my Daddys old friends from his Detroit days in the 30's and 40's gives me a call. Ed is 85 and I get the feeling that his own children don't really take the time to talk to him. Maybe they are too familar with what he has to say and are busy with their own lives. Ed likes to talk about investing money, a ready subject with me...he is a died in the wool BOnd man..U couldn't get him to invest in stocks now for love nor money..Lately we have been arguing about the Privatization of Social Security...he is dead against it...quoting an old professor from his High School days in Detroit..."Remember the poor will allways be with us." to whcih ED adds that so many people don't have a lick of sense about handling their own money and need the government to provide a safety net for them.... to which I reply but look this is going to be a no brainer privatization select one from column A and one from column B like ordering Chinese food...and the majority of moneies will still be allocated as a fixed entitlement. Besides that do the math of what a portion of your SS contribution will earn by just compounding interest..which you can leave to your heirs...But Ed will have none of it, after all is said and done you can't change the Liberal mind set of those old Detroit Polacks from the depression .

That said, the guy I am flying with now is a financial idiot. The local power company has a program where you can pay $150 in each month and at the end of the year they add it all up and send him in the refund. He says that this is easier than worrying about paying the high power bills during the summer, which in Phoenix can be over $200-$250 a month. So he sends them money 9 months a year that far exceeds his monthly bill and they use it interest free and send him a refund??!!!

This is as bad as the people who jump for joy when they get a refund from their taxes. Do they not realize that they let the govt use their money all year long for free???
