Gawd Was It Hot In NYC
As the subject says - I am ever so happy to be home in the cool Bay Area. This was the worst summer trip I have ever taken to NYC. I think it was >95F and near 100 pct humidity every day. My 6 y/o and I walked from the Natural History Museum to Rockefeller Center - okay for him since I carried him on my shoulders much of the way, but hell on me. Of course only a tourist would be so stupid. Boston sucked too, and so did Connecticutt and New Jersey.
One good thing, though, was that the women in Manhattan were looking very attractive and wearing rather little. I happen to think that NYC has a lot of very hot women - slim, toned, stylish, not pneumatic like LA or FL women. If I were young and single, I'd consider living in NYC. If I were making a lot of money, which would have to be over $500K/yr, I'd consider it now. But being over-the-hill, married with kids, and not making quite that nice a living (yet, I hope), I'll just go there for business trips.

Once you're used to it you start to like it. But the best thing to do is drink an ice cold IPA while in a pool.

Oh yeah, I tried that. Then I dropped my Blackberry in the pool. Made me too grumpy for a cold beer to cure.

Having said all of that, I'm sure it was very hot and humid. It was 97F here yesterday with a dewpoint of 73F. And I was out cutting the yard. Typical weather here in Alabama... Mike

So you walked from 79th to 49th with a child on your shoulders?
Did you take Park Drive or walk down Central Park West in front of the Dakota and then go across Central Park South to 6th and then down? Or did you walk through the Park? (Humid!) Anyway, next time you come back, let us know, there are MANY fine saloons to visit which tend to make the City much more hospitable.

Started 80th and Central Park W. Diagonally through the Rambles to Boat Pond. Fed the boy an ice cream. South through the park to one of the playgrounds on Central Park E. Had the boy play in the water shower. South through the park to the Zoo. Fed him another ice cream. Held an umbrella over his head. Down 5th Ave to Rockefeller Plaza. Descended gratefully to the concourse. Whew.
I come to NYC several times a year for business, they're mostly fly-in / do business / fly-out trips. When the weather gets a bit cooler I'll try to make a weekend out of the next trip. My grandmother is in Edison NJ and getting extremely aged (95-ish) and I need to take opportunities to visit her while she and I are still in the same dimension. I'll try to hook up w/ some Pelicans, including you, on one of those trips. Where's Hell's Kitchen? Is it what is called "Clinton" on the map, kind of around when the tunnel comes out?

The Jets are from Hell's Kitchen and the Sharks are from Clinton.

"Clinton" is named after DeWitt Clinton, former governor of New York State; there's a park on 11th Avenue in the Fifties named after him. The locals play softball there. Several cases of beer are consumed per inning and balls are frequently hit over the fence. Play is stopped until the ball is retreived.
Hell's Kitchen consists of a mix of low-rise brick tenements with the occasional 50-story residential high-rise thrown in. The main thoroughfare is 9th Avenue, which has a dizzying number of bars and restaurants featuring every cuisine and sub-cuisine imaginable. Want Afghan food following your Harp lagers? Brazillian Churrasco next to hipster Sushi. Unlike many other residential neighborhoods in New York, Hell's Kitchen retains it's 1950's feeling, although it has also suffered from the influx of chain stores and restaurants. It got the name "Hell's Kitchen" from an Irish gang that ran there in the 1860's-- the Police gave it that name.

You think the weather this past weekend was bad? Come back in February and you'll see how we get the "best" of both worlds!
Ah, if I only had a house in Maine for the summer and a house in SF for the winter. That would be good.
