I love Kauai. Take a hike down to the swamp. Take a swim in Hanalei Bay. Poipu is the heavily tourist section...not my favorite.

Kauai is the best (well, besides Tahiti). Take the helicopter flight through Waimea, their 'grand canyon' and up the Na Pali coast. Poipu has good weather, a nice cove and snorkeling/diving. Getting to Poipu, you can drive through a 'tree tunnel.' Just west of there is a lava shelf over the ocean that has some pretty dramatic blow holes. Although Kauai is far less touristy than the other islands, some popular sites like the fern grotto are still worth seeing.

Cool. Neat place. I won a trip there once on a game show near the end of college. It was only a 4 day trip and I delayed my return flight so I could stay longer. I had very little money so I rented an ugly duckling rent-a-car (78 Toyota Tercel with aluminum tape covering rust holes) for $9.95 a day and drove to different parts of the island and camped in a tent in the state parks. You have to get a permit to camp, but it's only $6 a day or something. The helicopter tour and a day long sailboat cruise around the north side of the island for scenery and snorkeling were both cool. The fern grotto was kinda cool also. Have fun.

My wife and I went to Kauai last year with my wife (10 year annniversary).
For an awesome experience, take a trip up the Na Pali coast with Catamaran Kahanu. Father / son hawaii team - excellent experience. Just tell the son that the guy who celebrated his 10 year anniversary last year sent ya! (Or, tell him I'm the guy who mis-pronounced the hawaian word for arm band -- I pronounced it 'balls' as is 'you gotta have balls to sky dive' instead. ![]()

Agree with the above -- you MUST spend a bit of time on the other side of the island (north shore if I remember right), away from the major tourist areas.
I was there a few years ago for my sister-in-law's wedding and can't wait to go back minus the dysfunctional family and *****y friends... ![]() ![]()

My sister is on the north shore right now. She says the scenery is beautiful, but there is a heat wave right now, and the heat and humidity are hard to take. 90 degrees and high humidity = sweating constantly. Frequent changes of clothing, need to take a shower before breakfast, before dinner, and again before going to bed. And this is a girl in superb physical condition. She says all you can do is try to ignore the heat, and enjoy yourself regardless.

![]() Go to the west side of the island for a big, beautiful beach where everything is relaxed (at least to european standards). You'll have to drive your rental through the cane fields over the caterpillar tracks, but it's worth it. ![]() Vash, pictures are in order.... both before the trip & of the trip. Peacock Bass - that's native to S. Amer! I thought the enviromental police were eliminating any non-native species?

Just got back from Kauai for my niece's wedding at the Botanical Garden on the north shore by the lighthouse.
The hot weather must have just happened. We were there 5 days until Sat. and although it was 80, there was always a breeze. The south side is a little hotter though. I went to my first Walmart in Lihue. I understand 1/4 of all DVDs sold are through WM ($7). Took the kids snorkeling. Beautiful beaches. It's a far cry from downtown Honolulu. Spent a few days there sightseeing. I also drove down Waikiki at night and noticed the multitude of hookers with the longest legs I've ever seen. No pics though - sorry. Gas prices in So. Cal. are the same; $2.80/gal. for reg. Good thing the island isn't that big. Sherwood |

I agree with techweenie...the Na Pali coast is definitly worth seeing, even though I haven't been to Kauai myself.
I'm on Oahu, and is more than glad to give you a tour of the island...assuming the girls really are cute ![]()

Rent the kayaks (plastic 2 person jobies) and paddle up the kamaniwannaleiu river. You go by the movie set for Apocalypse now (I think) and then hike through the rain forrest to the waterfalls for a photo op. Paddler a little further to the rope swings and play Tarzan over the river. Water is the perfect temp.
One Caveat. The luaus are commercial but fun, and there will be a sobriety check site just down the road from the luau. Careful on the rum punch!

let's see. freeze my arse hiking thru northern new mexico or hawaii? as crazy as it seems, this is a tough decision.

My wife and I just got back from our vacation to Baltimore and Ocean City Maryland. Mind you, last year, we spent two weeks on Kauai and Maui. While in Baltimore and OC, we spoke often abuot how much better last years trip was. We are already planning on next year's trip back to Hawaii. I doubt we'll even think of Maryland while there... Aloha, -Z.
