Wow... they are following IBM's footsteps but about 10 years later and how many billions? Did Compaq bring them anything besides computers? That purchase of Palm was a waste.

Close. According to DealBook:
"Hewlett-Packard is near a sweeping transformation of its business, announcing on Thursday that it was in talks to buy the British software maker Autonomy and that it would explore options for its personal computer business, including a spinoff."

HP Kills Tablets, Confirms PC Spin-off Plans
By Agam Shah, IDG News Hewlett-Packard on Thursday said it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad tablets and smartphones. It also confirmed that it is exploring the possible spin-off or sale of its Personal Systems Group (PSG), which dominates the global PC market. When they pay me to take a free laptop, I'll become an HP customer again.

HP actually does a bunch big business/enterprise stuff. They make servers and all sorts of stuff that most folks would never buy or have in their house. I suspect that may be a big part of the business that they'll be focusing on.

I stand corrected on Tablet/Phones/WebOS (nice use of $1.8B to buy Palm):
HP Reports Third Quarter 2011 Results and Initiates Company Transformation PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- As part of the transformation, HP announced that its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for the company's Personal Systems Group. HP will consider a broad range of options that may include, among others, a full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction. (See accompanying press release.) HP will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. The devices have not met internal milestones and financial targets. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward. In addition, HP announced the terms of a recommended transaction for all of the outstanding shares of Autonomy Corporation plc for £25.50 ($42.11) per share in cash. Autonomy's software powers a full spectrum of mission-critical enterprise applications, including pan-enterprise search, customer interaction solutions, information governance, end-to-end eDiscovery, records management, archiving, business process management, web content management, web optimization, rich media management and video and audio analysis. The addition of Autonomy will accelerate HP's ability to deliver on its strategy to offer cloud-based solutions and software that best addresses the changing needs of businesses. (See accompanying press release.) Can't fault them for focusing on the Enterprise. Used to be the biggest HP fan (11C, 12C, 41C; original LaserJet, etc.) but the stuff of late is merde.

I think they saw dollar signs from the iPad, but WebOS was about 3 years too late. Palm was the Smartphone market and then they didn't update their OS for almost 5 years! I ended up switching to Windows Mobile! If WebOS was out before the iPhone came out, it might have been a bit less one sided, but I may be wrong.

We buy a ton of blade servers from them, probably north of 1k BL class machines a year. The servers are great, but I wouldn't own a PC from them. Smart move though, they likely want out of their expensive plants like Corvallis, just sell the name off to an overseas company like IBM did.

Does PC = laptops? I presume so, but who knows. We've had very good luck with our HP laptops, but tablets do seem like the way of the future.

HP makes desktops and Laptops. The tablets they are selling use a different OS than Android.
