A hard workout at the gym or a long run always lifts my spirits. A successful repair/mod on the Porsche or the motorcycle followed by a long drive also seems to do the trick.
|
I go fly an airplane for an hour or two. Always sets things right again.
Sometimes a solo hike in the mountains. Sometimes a spirited drive. Sometimes roasting marshmallows over a fire in my back yard with my wife and friends. Sometimes doing ten year old things with my ten year old daughter. Yup, life is pretty good. |
I self medicate with coffee in the morning then wine or the occasional margarita 5:00PM ->. Thankfully no need for something stronger yet.
Todd - so the Subie got taken? Have you recovered it? |
Dantilla, I second the "fly an airplane" thing.
In the cockpit you cannot think of anything else but what you are doing and keeping your mind ahead of the airplane. The only person responsible for you having a great flight is YOU. The only person keeping you from buying a ride from Charon, boatman of the river Styx, is YOU. YOU are in control. Looking down on the earth below, it's the same way some people feel in a tall building, or reading a map, or looking at Google Earth-- not a "G_d complex" but a mixture of wonder at the extent of human settlement, and the insignificance of all of it compared to the timelessness of the earth itself. Flying is not merely a mountain of technical information that you learn over a great deal of time-- not merely a mix of cognitive situational awareness and physical coordination, and not merely a VERY safety-conscious, hazard-aware mindset. It's all of these simultaneously, worn like a second skin that you strap on when you enter the cockpit and then reluctantly take off when you return to the world. But nothing lasts forever. Every time you take off you have a plan for how you're going to land. Flying an instrument approach is like surgery-- the patient can only be open for a certain amount of time, everything must be done right, and then everything must be stitched up correctly. If things don't go right, you can't just throw up your hands and pull over. In the middle of it, though, time seems to drag on for hours, not because of adrenaline, but because your mind is so stimulated by the constant attention required. And like all good addictions it's expensive as hell. |
Paxil, baby. Saved my life but made me fat as a cow. I used to be a devoted bodybuilder so the fat is pretty hard to take. But if you down enough hits of Paxil, you don't mind. :D:D
|
I went on Paxil after my first wife passed away. It got me through the worst part, but then I stayed on it because of a small side effect...it ended years of intermittent insomnia.
It also evens out my natural moodiness. Better living through Chemistry! |
OK I'll join in.
For me the best anti-d is sex with my friend Carol. But untill her husband gets a new job I still have my kayak. Nothing more relaxing than drifting out to sea and then just lay back and let the world rotate under me. |
it's a state of mind. Got to take time to look at and enjoy stuff, flowers, birds, kids, sunsets, cars, whatever

What is a MILF?
Alcohol & pot made me depressed and antidepressants made me gain weight and (more seriously) prevented the blood circulating to the extremities. Travel & exercise (preferably together) are the best a-d for me. Wife and I went to Peru for 2 weeks and did 4 day hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The effects last for months and you lose weight too. Spectacular scenery: http://myweb.uiowa.edu/jconybea/peru_trip.htm Next year I think we will go hiking in Greece. |
