A major 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the United States Geological Survey.

A 9.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra in Dec. 2004, which set off a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed nearly 250,000 people.

Nothing out of the ordinary - just more media coverage of them.

As the world gets more populated, the likelihood that these sorts of events will happen near populated areas that merit reporting increases. However the earth has been doing this for millions of years. It's nothing new and certainly no evidence that the end is nigh.

It is like the Hurricane damage going up. It is a combination of inflation and more coastal population, not bigger, badder or more hurricanes.
