Billyboy? You are on to something. Gearheads are gearheads, regardless of the car they choose. Then there are the the people who buy things for the current status or social climbing fad. Alas, Porsche, the brand, entered the status label realm some time ago...it's no longer a car, it's a "designer label"...kinda like Kevin Cline, right?

Kevin Cline??

That's funny if intentional, and even if not.

But really, who cares why anyone buys something or what total strangers think of your fine automobile, etc...? One could go crazy worrying about such things.

I bet that if you asked the majority of boxster/cheeyneers about Porsche's racing history, they'd say huh? what racing, I didn't Porsche was involved with horses! It's all about image to them, same with the Escalade bling blingers.

At day's end, I don't worry about it. If I can drive a 32-year-old mostly-always filthy RS-look Carrera down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and turn not just the heads of the new Porsche, but Ferrari and Lambo set, then any of us can.

Many people know well-kept classics when they see them. My favorite is the eighty-year-old couple who stopped to appreciatively ogle my car, lingering to the point that I thought the old man (or woman) might try to steal my car...

For my money, Boxster and 996 owners - even GT-3 owners - lack something we have in abundance - real 911s blessed by Ferry's design; cars which will never again be reproduced as they are.

That says something no matter who is driving what...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
BMW 1 Boxter 0
I was going down I64 about 9.30 this am doing about 80 when a boxter decided he wanted to go about 81. I was in the right lane so he could go around me but he chose to become a part of my rear bumpercover. well I gave him about half throttle and held it there.
7000rpm+24.25inch tall tire+3.28 final drive=157mph. Much better than the boxter or my boys are just bigger than his. He backed out around 125. Talk about Ironic timing and he started it.
Just glad I didn't get caught.

This is a funny thread. You'll read the same thing on another boxster board about 996/997 owners not waiving at us. I usually don't flash people as I was taught that was a warning sign for " cop-ahead". Which I think is a better use of the flash. I hate comming around a mountain corner and have someone flash me. I gotta slow down and wonder, gee is he trying to say hi or is there a speed trap up ahead?

I wave all the time, but I'm a racer/enthusiaest. Have both the boxster and older 911.

Not always, but occaisionally, I just think some people have an inferiority complex and just think people are snobbing them. Weather boxster people thinking this about 996/997 owners or older porsches thinking this about boxster owners. As someone said above, maybe the other drive had something on their mind and simply didn't see you?

Absolutely. If I adjust the radio or something and look back up, and a Porsche is there, I'm not the type who's quick enough to be able to wave. I'm not a fan of waving to 996/7s...I know for a fact that some of them are friendly car guys, but others would brush it off. Why try in that case?

If I knew more air-cooler guys were ok with the waterpumpers, I'd wave, flash lights, or acknowledge in another good way. I've gotten some eye contact and nods.

And BTW, the ONLY thing I'm jealous of a Boxster for is the popup spoiler. Whole lot cooler than a big rubber half-assed 944 ducktail. (but that beats the 924's lack of a spoiler altogether )

Quite honestly if I had the money for a new Porsche, I'd still have an old one, just more good memories from childhood and definitely cooler. Now I'm not saying anything against new Porsches' with this ,I do think they are very cool and good etc, just that they aren't my cup of tea.

I agree billyboy I recon I would be concidered a purest but I love the classic look and feel of the older stuff. I wouldn't mind hopping into a new GT3 but I don't think the love would be the same. Mine is slow it is ill mannered and I never get tired of driving her. I feel fortunate to have found the car I have.
