Another recent Z06 bashing thread:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/250303-corvette-z06s-handling-scared-car-driver.html

Most Z06's are sold for MSRP, some even less. There hasn't been the price-gouging on the Z06 that was seen on, say, the GT40 or even the Corvette ZR1 of 15 years ago (which BTW was a 4-cam 4-valve small block V8.... I point that out to all the Vette haters who have some disdain for pushrods).

True story:

My father special-ordered a C6 (not Z06) convertible. Took 8 months to finally show up, and he paid a pretty penny for it.

He drove it 800 miles and sold it, bought a gently-used C5 with the same colors etc.

That Sucks that Steve W has left. His posts and inside info were nice to have around. Seems it might have been better to just blow off the insulting remarks, but it does seem that some of the remarks in this thread have been more obnoxious than they needed to be. Some seemed obnoxious just to be obnoxious.
Definitely a couple of wankers here, but hey, this is the internet.

Sounds like the vette suspension is set up with a bias towards the track more than the street. Wasn't the old Z-51 suspension in the 80's and/or 90's like that too?

Still, the N'ring is a rough track not some silky smooth flat track. If it can perform there...

Some of the people in this thread are denegrating pushrods and some of the other aspects of the Vette. Seems closed minded and ignorant to discount something with such astounding proven performance. Sheesh, maybe you should start wearing German seat covers on your heads and burning the Porsche crest in the yards of people that own vettes.

Get a grip and open your mind a bit.

The original Z51 suspension in the 1984 C4 Vette was unnecessarily harsh. They softened it a bit in later years. Today's Z51 suspension option in the C6 is more about brakes.

I've run laps in every suspension format available in the new C6 (non-Z06) and actually prefer the Magnetic Ride Control semi-active suspension. Unfortunately, it's not available with the brake upgrade. Remarkable on the street.

Seems that the Z06 is actually a bit soft for the track - a bit of rear wallow and undulation. It is SO smooth on the street....really surprising.

I can guarantee you that an aftermarket fix is on the way.....then the perfect beast will be had. Recall that the first Z06 went through some improvements over the few years it was in production.

The Z06 is a formidible, hellaciously fast BARGAIN - esp now that they are NOT going for more than MSRP.

Cross posting THIS THREAD from the AutoWeek website. More of the Z06discussion there...

Gosh we here it all the time, what a great deal the new vette is and the only thing that matters is 500hp for 70K...if it were only that simple. A 1000HP turbine shoe-horned into a Yugo does not make for a performance machine.

...

God lives in the DETAILS, and the Big Three will never get it right because the mindset is planned obsolescense.

Where does the $$ go for a 911, it's what you can't see that costs BIG $$... every 911 that has ever been produced has had a Dry-sump lubrication system? Why not just slap an oil pan at the bottom of the engine and bypass the expensive pressureized lubrication system? Why not just put on some regular wheels instead of forged magnesium alloy wheels? Why put a forged alloy crossmember between the two front wheels. Why build an engined derived from a racing powerplant(and really meant to turn serious RPM 24/7) instead of a modified truck motor(you CANNOT make a silk purse from a sows ear). Why build a machine that can go from Le Mans to the Paris-Dakar rally to the streets of NY and still come back for more. Because someone will always be willing to pay for "best in the world", and the 911 is still the benchmark by which all other sports cars are judged.

70K for a vette, and it STILL has a typical GM interior. Great car to be SEEN in if you are into bragging rights, but as far as a true GT Sports car that you could live with 24/7 and 4 seasons, the germans still have nothing to worry about.

If only the current 911 had a dry sump and forged magnesium wheels. An engine "derived" from a racing powerplant? LOL, not anymore. LeMans, maybe. Paris-Dakar? Um no--a modern 911 couldn't get down a gravel forest road faster than a 20 year old VW Golf.

Nice to see that Porsche's marketing has had such an effect on that poster, though. :D

The Autoweek forum seems to be a haven for pimply-faced 15 year old ricers, and pompous elitist professor-types. Let them bash it out.

I have to wonder about the people who worry about a new 997 or C6 being a 'daily driver'. Statistically / demographically the people who buy those cars when new own other 'daily' drivers.

It takes balls to drive a Vette or 911 in the snow-belt. But there are those that do! Current snow tire technology, and great weight balance make a 997 or C6 a decent car in the snow. And the new 997's have real heaters! I'd still park the thing and drive a beater in the salt, grit, and slush.
