Arrow Saddam Confessed to Crimes

" By OMAR SINAN
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq

Iraq's president said Tuesday that Saddam Hussein had confessed to killings and other "crimes" committed during his regime, including the massacre of thousands of Kurds in the late 1980s.

President Jalal Talabani told Iraqi television that he had been informed by an investigating judge that "he was able to extract confessions from Saddam's mouth" about crimes "such as executions" which the ousted leader had personally ordered.

Asked about specific examples, Talabani, a Kurd, replied "Anfal," the codename for the 1987-88 campaign which his Patriotic Union of Kurdistan maintains led to the deaths of about 182,000 Kurds and the destruction of "dozens of Kurdish villages."

Those villages included Halabja, where thousands of Kurdish villagers were gassed in 1988.

You nor any of your lefty leaders care one lick about our men and women in the military...you do not speak for them and you use them simply as a political prop. Our voluntary military believe in the cause and regularly reenlist...
Quote:
Even though the Army appears likely to miss its goal of recruiting 80,000 new soldiers this year, it’s ahead of the pace needed to reach its goal of convincing 64,162 soldiers, from privates to top sergeants, to re-enlist by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

Through the end of May, 45,333 soldiers had re-enlisted, said Lt. Col. Pamela Hart, an Army spokeswoman at the Pentagon. That’s 70 percent of the Army’s full-year goal.

Nearly 11,000 soldiers from the elite 18th Airborne Corps, which includes four of the Army’s 10 active divisions, have “re-upped” this year. That’s about 86 percent of the corps’ full-year goal, said the corps commander, Maj. Gen. Virgil Packett.

“The XVIII Airborne Corps is carrying the Army right now in retention,” Packett said.

And leading the corps is the 82nd Airborne, which has reached 97 percent of its annual goal, even though it has deployed regularly to Iraq and Afghanistan.
...so put down your crocodile tears and feigned sympathetic white flag and STFU!

"Anfal" was common knowledge to all but those whose skepticism masked an ideological refusal to admit the massacre. The Kurds are wonderful people, and Hussein slaughtered them. Hussein's confession means nothing to me; I knew the truth years ago.

Let's review some history.

It was the Kurds we supported and encouraged to fight against Hussein in '75 (Nixon/Kissinger) and again during the first Gulf war in '91 (when GW's dad was POTUS). We reneged support for Kurdish resistance and gave Hussein money, weapons and gas (as in nerve). SH paid ex-alliies Kurds with many visits using our weapons against them - tens of thousands killed by most accounts.

So much for US credibility, and no wonder the Kurds are suspicious of US involvement once again.

With friends like this....

This story about "Saddam's confession" has all the earmarks of a typical Drudge pickup: a not-very-credible report from a third party.

Perhaps you'll note that Saddam's lawyer said it didn't happen.

With the right amperage in the right places, Saddam might also look deep into his heart and confess to the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa.

I do know that the Turks killed/murdered about 200,000 Kurds (mostly civilian). The Turks claim Kurds killed 30,000 Turks (mostly military troops).

Turkish policy included flooding villages by blowing up dams, bulldozing houses/huts while families slept, and starvation through isolation and blockades.

All this in a ten year peroid of battle with the Kurdish freedom fighter/terrorist group the PPK. Which if I'm not mistaken ended with the head PPK guys capture in the early 1990's.

Turkey is a US ally, not one of our better ones.

You continue to out do yourself.

Poor Saddam. Have you contributed to his legal defense fund yet?
