Environmentalist's Katrina fallout

Quote:
The New Orleans Army Corps of Engineers and Professor Stone were not the only people cognizant of the consequences that could and did result because of the environmental activists. While speaking with Sean Hannity on his radio show on Labor Day, former Louisiana Congressman and Speaker of the House Bob Livingston also referred to environmentalists whose litigation prevented hurricane prevention projects.

In other words, unlike other programs – including the ones leftists like Sid Blumenthal excoriated the president for not funding – these constructions might have prevented the loss of life experienced in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina...

snip

the Times-Picayune wrote, “Those plans were abandoned after environmental advocates successfully sued to stop the projects as too damaging to the wetlands and the lake's eco-system.” (Emphasis added.) Specifically, in 1977, a state environmentalist group known as Save Our Wetlands (SOWL) sued to have it stopped. SOWL stated the proposed Rigolets and Chef Menteur floodgates of the Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane Prevention Project would have a negative effect on the area surrounding Lake Pontchartrain. Further, SOWL’s recollection of this case demonstrates they considered this move the first step in a perfidious design to drain Lake Pontchartrain entirely and open the area to dreaded capitalist investment.

1977, wow. You are really reachin', man...

environmentalists whose litigation prevented hurricane prevention projects.

I'd like to see what an hurricane prevention project entails: Eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog, I'm sure.

Well, it's really the conservative's fault; if they hadn't bought the damn swamp back in 1803, this wouldn't be an issue.

Levee's and cat-5s existed back then too...I am sure that the local authorities and governance got pretty comfortable misappropriating funds away from flood control and levee improvements, but that does not excuse their negligence and the fact that enviros lobbied against improvements that would have thwarted this disaster.

If the "enviros" had slowed global warming way back when, then maybe we wouldn't have had a cat 5 hurricane.

Silly? About as much as the original post in the thread. "Facts" are dangerous when you don't know how to interpret them...

Somehow I have a feeling we had cat 5 hurricanes before man was here and will continue long after we're gone. This global warming argument is just tired.

Humans certainly are at the bottom of the list of concerns for Environmentalists, but think how many (human . .not Darter snails) lives would have been saved if they had been more succesful in keeping those wetlands undeveloped.

What are you getting at, island? Are you saying that New Orleans would have been less vulnerable to Katrina if there had been less development of wetlands?

No, I'm saying that more Darter snails would have died.

The Environmentalist would have screwed-up.

c'mon; how do you get "(area) less vulnerable to Katrina" from "more lives saved"?

Even Bush has given up on pretending there isn't global warming. Now he blatantly wants his cake and to eat it too (looking for an alternative to Kyoto).

Skip - that depends if he's inculcating at one of his "town-halls" - or at the G8 in Gleneagles. Two very different positions.

edit: and I don't mean geographic positions either.. whew

Skip

He kinda does...

http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4664549.stm

While he still doesn't categorically state he believes, in the wake of G8 he acknowledges:

- climate change as a challenge (ie, that the climate is changing)
- greenhouse gasses as the problem; and
- people as the cause.

That's pretty damn close to believing...

Facts are always "dangerous" to leftists... That's why they're always telling us how to "interpret" them...

Facts are by definition statements of truth. They only require "intrepretation" by those who find them "inconvenient".
For example the fact that there has been no increase in the average strength or severity of hurricanes world-wide over the past 50 years is an "inconvenient" fact to those who want to pretend that Katrina was "caused by global warming"...
