Why do you use the Pelican discussion threads?
Hi folks,
I am always amazed at the number of people using the technical Pelican boards. I have used them many times, asked questions and got great answers so fast, answers that have have saved me time and lots of money. At other times I have helped people out. provided advice, a give and take community. To me, we are a group of people who are brought together by a desire to learn more about automobiles, using one another and outside resources to learn and teach each other and are drawn to one another by a passion for cars. So my questions to you are: 1) Why do you visit the technical sites, providing questions, answers, giving advice, tips? 2) Why do you share your expertise free of charge? Why do you want to help fellow car owners? 3) And most of all why do you keep coming back? Thanks, Derek

for me it's the chocolate pudding and mental masturbation. I wish most of my friends were as smart as the guys on the OT board.
For technical, I shared the week-by-week build of my track car and TRY to share anything new I learn along the way. I TAKE much more than I give. On classifieds, my role is ONLY to protect the innocent who may be taken by wily purchasers/sellers. ![]() through all of this, I've met a lot of fellow Pelicans nationwide in my travels or in theirs to my neighborhood. In short, it's all about Community (but the chocolate pudding is nice too... just ask Wayne about it).

The opportunity to be a member of one big family from all over the world (well almost) sharing the same fanatic passion for the greatest cars ever built and exchanging experience and technical knowledge along with a variety of other topics, even personal, within a community that won´t spread your word all around the neighborhood (and to your spouse).
Who wouldn´t ?

2) Because I think it is fun. It gives me a chance to speak my knowledge (yes, very limited I know) and to get to know other Pelicans. 3) Because I have nothing better to do. It's an ADDICTION!!! ![]()

Wayne,
Funny that you find the questions strange, I am simply trying to ask exactly what is posted. I think it is an awesome site, use it almost daily, have got some great advice, purchased parts and so on. I am curious to know what it is about the site that keeps people coming back. Several people have mentioned they are addicted. Funny that we are addicted to cars! I am just curious about what it is that brings an international audience together to share their passion and knowledge. Cheers, Derek

1 I loved my 911 and wanted to learn about it. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for the marque. Once I learned a bit I enjoyed helping other people on their way to learning more.
2 Weird question 3 several reasons, enthusiasm for the marque and another big reason is the people here. Most of the posters are intelligent interesting people that share other interests besides just Porsches.

Thanks masraum,
In response to number two being weird I am just amazed at how the site provides so much great free advice and that as users we are so open to sharing to benefit others. I am just curious to know what it is about the cars we drive that make us so willing to share and help each other. To me it is a great "give and take" community. Cheers, Derek

Derek,
Do you have any pics of your cars? What makes a 69 euro T different? As an E owner who is slowly converting to a european cafe racer (French yellow H1s/4s are one style cue), I'd love to see any special elements. Also, what are you doing with your 356? Shaun

I also occasionally jump on the miata forum. They are a very similar crowd to this one except the average salary is probably lower, but even with the occasional youngster it's still a pretty good place to go. I wouldn't even consider a civic, supra, integra, or BMW3 series site. Having to wade through the idiot kids in their rice to get to the better posts wouldn't be worth it.
Occasionally we get an idiot here. When they come to learn we usually are good to them, but if they come trolling for trouble we run 'em off.

Because you get an excellent diversity of experiences, cultures, and most people are fairly articulate and some are just plan funny and entertaining as all get out. Also, the no vulgarity thing is refreshing compared to other boards. I travel alot and have had a beer or three with many, many excellent pelicanites in cities that I've traveled to. Ok that's for OT, for the 911 board a wealth of historical information and a wealth of people willing to share knowledge and experience that I wish I had access to 30 or more years ago. One of my first searches on the 911 board was about the auto heat not working and bingo! the first thread that pops up was about the plastic ball and cup on the rod under the cover between the seats that will pop off. Opened it up and sure enough. I was ready to start diagnosising the electronics (shudder looking at that wiring diagram). Right then, I knew this place was a good thing.

procon,
You are right, I guess it is a sociology experiment. Never really thought of that. Based on some of the responses, it really is a cultural thing. We are just addicted to these cars and I guess that makes it so easy to relate to others who share the same obsession! Cheers, Derek
