The best handgun ever made?
I guess it depends on the era...some would say the S.A. Colt...others the 1911. Some prefer the Smith or Colt wheelguns in various calibers. Newbies seem to love the Glock. Me? I think John Browning illustrates firearm design genius, and I absolutely love my Hi-Power.

I'm currently in the market. Every gun guy I talk to mentions how the Glock just shoots, every time. Not the most accurate, but the most dependable.

The Hi Power is definitely a high ranking contender (No pun intended).

While the 1911 .45 auto is my favourite, believe that one of the best all around guns is the Dan Wesson .357 magnum. It has interchangeable barrels which allow you to use anything from a 2" barrel to long, real long on the same frame!
Owned one years ago and wished I had never sold it. As well the .357 will shoot .38 specials as well, making it cheaper to keep in practice, so is a very versitile weapon. JoeA

"Best" is hard.
I'll try "most significant". My choice is this, the first commercially manufactured autoloading pistol. ![]() Which begat this, one of my favorite pistols (even if mine is prone to jamming). ![]()

My all-time favorite is the old Peacemaker with the 4 3/4" barrel in .45 Colt. I'm not sure that it is the "best", as it does have the drawback of being slow to reload. If you only need five shots, I don't think you can do any better. Some claim it has weak springs that are prone to breakage, but I have never had one fail. I keep one in the night stand for home defense, carry one while in the outdoors for any reason, and even for concealed carry. I've killed rabbits, coyotes, ground squirrels, rock chucks, deer, antelope, and caribou with one. The RCBS .45-255K cast from wheel weights over 16.5 grains of 2400 and a CCI magnum primer is good for just about 1,000 fps and will group quite well at 50 yards with the fixed sights. It's all I have ever felt I needed from a sidearm.

Joeaksa, I was curious about your .357.
I have looked at a couple of 2" .357s for concealed carry, but isn't the recoil extreme? I realize that if you ever end up pointing a gun at someone, recoil is going to be the last thing on your mind....

I know it's kind of pedestrian, but I really enjoy my Ruger MarkII.

The 2" barrel is really for carry use and it is about as accurate as an old WW2 1911 .45 auto past 15 feet. Personally I would prefer a 4" or 6" barrel. This is what should be used for any accuracy as well as the muzzle blast is less than on the short puppy. You are correct that the short barrel just does not have the mass to keep the gun down after being fired. Shooting with the magnum shells is even more so... Do not have it anymore, sure wish I did! I did not know what a CZ75 was, so I googled it. Looks like a great gun. I also found some graphics of my two favorites:

I have owned a S&W model 19 for years. Nice gun, but I am thinking about adding a Glock, 9mm. Anyone recommend a web site other than Glock that does "reviews"?

tough question. You almost have to break it down by calibre. Colt 1911 is my first choice for larger cal. Then I would go with my Walther PP in .380 great carry and deadly accurate. However my favorites are the Colt 1903 pocket hammerless in either .380 or .32. They are just flat out old work horses. Eat anything you feed them and fire every time. However if I were pressed to name the best gun EVER....Colt Peacemaker. Good enough for Patton, good enough for me.

I've owned all of these for over 25 years, so obviously, I'm happy with all of them
![]() S&W M29 .44 mag w/ 8 3/8" barrel S&W M27 .357 mag w/ 6 1/2" Colt 'Diamondback' .22 w/ 6" Colt 'Combat Commander' .45 ACP Each has their niche, and in a given scenario, one might be 'better suited' for the task at hand, but if I had to pick only one...hands down, the .45 is the one I'd choose... |
