October is almost here!..........

And that means Octoberfest!

Nothing is better for me than a nice cold mug of octoberfest. The german tradition is a good one. The local watering troughs are putting octoberfests on their taps for the month already. Good thing this only comes around once a year or I'd indulge to excess 365 days a year.

My Father-in-law took up homebrewing about 3 years ago. We had some at my engine drop 2 weeks and he brought over a six pack of it today. This is a VERY good batch! Kind of like Bass ale. He made a Porter earlier this year that was kick-butt! I should make up some labels for him. Not for the bottles though, for the cartons.

It's relatively easy to brew a nice "Newcastle Brown Ale" clone!

Alaskan Amber and Newcastle are my current liquids. Laughed at Schlitz Malt. Remembering how my HS buds and I would wait outside liquor stores and hope for a "score". Hey it tasted bad then too, but we were only looking for the best buzz for the buck.

Invested a lot of my early bar drinking money on good ol Bud in a can. Still buy it occasionally. But my all time favorite beer is any beer that's free. :)

Which is what I did last Tuesday at a new joint here in Madison. Moules frite (all you can eat, mayo on the side, even) for $12.00, and they had Hoegaarden, too! Now, all they need is to stock Leffe ...

My current number one is Palmetto Brewing Company's (Charleston, SC) pale ale. It is lightly hoppy, with a smooth flavor and very good, crisp after taste. Really first class. Unfortunately, their Lager is, so far, really horrific, almost sour in flavor. I'm going to write them to find out if the lager has been handled improperly or something since it's quite odd for a company to have such dispartity among their products especially if they're both made in house.

In California, I made Red Nectar my number one. Different that a Pale Ale, it was more of a fine Scottish Ale, with a less sweet after taste. The brewery was near Humbolt State University initially, I had the chance to visit the Brew Pub and restaurant; but is now located in Paso Robles, purchased by a beer enthusiast and moved completely. The beer changed somewhat, but is still very good.

I seldom drink imported beer these days, beer doesn't get better with age, and most imports take too long to get to the consumer. Why waste time with them when so many excellent beers are being brewed in America these days.

Constant staples: Bass/Guinness/Harp, Spaten, and Duvel.
When I can find them: St. Bernardus (Abt 12, & Grottenbier), Westmalle, Grimbergen, Orval.
Special Occasions: Westvleteren 12 (St. Sixtus).

There are so many good beers but for some reason I have spent the summer on a Pabst Blue Ribbon jag. Maybe it's the $5.00 twelve packs that appeals to me
