WTH are our refineries clustered?

We could loose 30% of our refining capacity due to Rita? Is there a reason so many of our refineries are clustered in one area?

Nobody wants these in their backyard, so they go to La and Texas where the chemical companys get great tax incentives.

Well, the oil industry has been big in Texas since Spindletop.

The delivery of feed stock, the ability to share power and steam. Most adjoining chem plants will use the by products of the refineries. Ability to use each others pipeline capabilities and tank farms.

What about gas stations ?
We used to have one on every corner in our area, and in the shortage in the seventy's they had big lines. Now we have half as many stations storing fuel that the consumer can access and twice as many cars/people.

They're all clustered there because legislation won't allow them to be built anywhere else...

And George Bush does not care about the Off-Topic section.

this is the reason.

anywhere else and the cost would go WAY up. best way to move crude is by ship. no way around it.

The refineries were built there because that's where the crude oil was found some many years ago.Nothing more/nothing less. How stupid, yes stupid ,can the current crop of citicizens get.Are there shadows in everything that occurs?

Boy, I guess that's why they pump oil all the way from Bakersfield to Torrance to refine it, because the oil was over 100miles away.
Not all these younger guys may relize somethings. They have to be taught.

I hear that is the first sign.

No, wait. .. that's not it. The first sign of stupid is when one reads WAY too much in to a posted question (clandestine wha'?). . . and reacts with outrage to nothing that was there to begin with.

oh, and our refineries are clustered in one area, cuz some people figured it would be the best sol'n. $

The refineries are where the ports are. I assume that most of the supertankers crossing the Panama Canal with crude from Venezuela go to Houston, because it is the shortest road. Guess why there are refineries in Newark, NJ too?
