Pinup Art - need some opinions...
What do you guys and gals think of pin up art? Would you collect it? So far, I've found there are three base types within the genre.
TYPE 1: Old School:  This piece "Over Exposure" is by Gil Elvgren; 1959, one of the premiere pinup artists from the 30s through to the 60s. What's cool about the old school pinups are the stories they tell in one image. Anyone can guess what's happening here... TYPE 2: New School:  This is called "Samurai" by Drew Posada, a highly respected comic book artist whose also well known in the contemporary pinup world. This is from 2000. New School seems somewhat based in fantasy. Hmmm....fantasy is good... TYPE 3: In-your-face harsh-girl pinup:  "Lizzy Goes To London" (2002) is by Lorenzo Sperlonga. He's from Heavy Metal, Playboy and Hustler fame. A very cool artist; acerbic and loud. I couldn't post half of this guy's stuff and not be banned from OT. So, what do you guys think of this genre? Does it do anything for you, and why? If it does nothing for you, why? Thanks for your input.

I've always loved the old school stuff. Don't love the type-2or3. But that's just a gut reaction. Never really paid much attention. I think that might change...
Do you plan to start collecting for your walls?

As well I like the old stuff but then am an old fart. Grew up dreaming of the stuff painted on the WW2 planes...

Skip - we plan on producing the art, if all things pan out as far as cost and demand. We're looking into artists right now, and themes.
For example: "Over Exposure:" doctor's theme... Cool Chick - I'm very glad you chimed in. I definitely want a woman's opinion as half the artists are women... Joe - exactly, my friend! It's all in the story. Can you send me or post the link to those images? Here's one of my favorites so far:  It's called "Bomb's Away" by Paul Corfield. The best part: he's only 35, and illustrates a complete story with one image... |

Well here's my thoughts on marketing...
What's your target audience? Who would buy it? I have a couple thoughts on this.... If you think mostly teens and college kids would buy, then you want to go with 2 and 3. If you target adults, #1 would apply. When looking at these, I was thinking, as a woman, I would definitely hang number one. I would not put #2 or #3 in my house. It's appearing the men here tend to agree. Not to mention, many have wives to get by...hehe. But would most adults buy that kind of art in #1? I am inclined to say good chance, depending on the decor (#1 might look nice in my kitchen, I have an old-time cigarette girl now and it looks great). But two and three, I don't see many teen girls buying, but definitely a must-have for the boys......the boys would die to have it. But, not knowing your price range....could a teen afford it? Where do you think you could sell more? Adults or teens? Guess that's the million dollar question... |

Target the baby boomer generation and do it NOW. They will buy and have the bux to do it.
I just worked with the daughter of a famous aviation author the last week. Her Father passed away and I am buying a lot of his collectable items to save. It might hurt a bit on the funds but I can afford it. I am the last year of the baby boom and the others above me can afford it a lot more. Target them... and the time is right. JoeA

Okay guys - this is a great start with very good feedback. I'll take your comments into our next line plan meeting and come back with the results.
Cool Chick and Joe - you guys nailed it. L.A. is a bizarre barometer from which to judge artwork, and while I have confidence here, nationwide, artwork is a much different story. Even worldwide. Just this week, we found out Pepe Le Pew is hugely offensive in France. Now if our resident Frenchman, Aurel, had told me that before we helped support a show in Paris, we wouldn't have egg on our faces. Oh well... Moses: those images are, unfortunately, not what we're after. They have attraction, but we, as an art source with clientele such as who Cool Chick and Joe define, I'd hesitate against bared breasts and butt cracks. But thank you for the suggestion. Blue: you're on target, but Art Frahm's fallen panty thing...I don't know...it hits a theme though which I like - what we're after is theme, story in imagery, and not unabashedly sexual. Like Joe and others have said, it's the mind that really unleashes the fantasy. That's what we're after. All-in-all, this is in its infancy, and I wanted to run it by you guys first because of the demographics you hold in OT. It looks like I've already locked down an artist whose work I'll display in either this thread or a newer thread. One way or the other, I'll keep you apprised of all that happens. Here's three more I like by Greg Hildebrandt. The style is very suggestive, but has an extremely cool film noir classiness:
"Mint Julip"  "An Offer You Can't Refuse"  "Sudden Danger"  Too much? Too little? Or as Baby Bear would say: "Just right."  Any thoughts? |

Too much...and not enough.
All of these modern artists still somehow fail to capture the essence of the pin-up. Even Olivia (sorry). I'm not edumacated in artsy terms enough to enumerate the characteristics of the ideal pin-up. But I know it when I see it. Maybe it's that the modern artists produce more "artifical"-looking women? Maybe something with their use of light? How about some Frazetta? Edited. -Z-man.
