Shotgun for home defense.

.357 Magnum, double action with a 4" barrel for camping.

Get a concealed permit if you can.

Cheers,

Paul.

Second choice is a revolver. Unlike previously posted, you CAN buy a revolver with a safety. And if you buy a S&W, you can always have it refitted with a Murabito safety. [/SIZE]
Another example of a bad answer to a question that was never asked. What a horrible way to ruin a functionaly beautiful and simple piece of equipment. Imagine fumbling around in the dark, scared, under a great deal of stress, trying to operate this "safety". Oops... pressing it that way opens the cylinder instead... ammo all over the floor... Every bit as useless as the safeties on modern lever guns. So yes, while indeed you CAN, you most certainly should not.

RE: Safety on a revolver

Jeff,

You're correct... the question was never asked. I somehow misread your page 1 post...

There are no safeties other than you.
... and took it that you were saying that revolvers were not available with safety devices.

I also agree that an aftermarket safety device is not something that I personally would purchase - but there are those people in our society who do want that. I just put it out there for information.

Yeah, I kind of figured from your background that you were throwing this out just as an FYI. My reply was not directed at you, but at the "safety" itself. It never ceases to amaze me when I see this kind of stuff. The people in our society that want these are the Sarah Brady's, and they try to convince the less savy that they need one. The more of this kind of stuff they can pursuade, or better yet mandate, people to put on their guns the happier they are. Eventually there are so many layered "safety" features that it is rendered unusable. Mission accomplished.

I have .357 Rossi. I bought it after our old house was burglarized and they stole our .38. I like revolvers. Very simple, very easy. Wife understands how it operates.

The new gun resides in one of these (and it is bolted down):

Hopefully I'll never have to get it out of the box. When we built our new house we installed a security system and lots of outdoor lights. If they want to get in the house, they will. I figure the alarm will give me 10 seconds to get the gun out of the box.

I think a second option might be a 20 gauge pump shotgun. Just for fun if I bought one it would be chrome finish with the pistol grip. Of course one of those doesn't fit in the lockbox.

I paid about $400 for it new. I have it loaded with .38 rounds, .357 bullets are bit much.

Good plan. Light one of these little puppies off in a dark room with .357's in it and see what happens. You'll be deaf, dumb, and blind - and still won't play mean pinball.

Great little guns by the way; couldn't make a better choice for home defense. You touched on something a lot of guys miss as well. The wife understands it and can handle it. That scores big points in my book.

Here's my collection. You really can't go wrong with any of these: Mossberg 3000 12g.; Walther P99, 9mm, Ruger SP 101 357 Mag, CZ RAMI 40 cal. and S&W 1911 .45 ACP. Pardon the photo skills.

How do you like the SW1911? That's what I am thinking about getting for XMas. How's the accuracy and reliability been?

HardDrive 11-04-2005 09:44 PM

I second the question about the 1911. I was looking at exactly that gun for myself. Happy with it?

I keep a Louisville Slugger behind my bedroom door for less lethal but painful situations. I prefer subsonic ammo for lessening the potential for collateral casualties from penetration through adjacent walls.

My favorites:

S&W Air Weight alloy .38/.357 bobbed hammer in an ankle holster
Sig P228 in a inside the waistband holster
12 ga Mossberg shotgun
HK-54 or MP5

LOL, those things are about as useful for self defense as a paperweight....

Seeeu911 11-06-2005 03:30 AM

IMHO a home defense handgun should have these things:
Night sights, an attached light and a laser. I use hollow points.

the night sights lets you get on target without giving anything away, the laser is for more accurate target acquisition and intimidation, a flashlight thats weapon mounted keeps you from fumbling both a gun and a flashlight. The light also helps to identify and blind your invader or spouse/kid sneaking back home drunk etc at the same time.
